Question 1

What action by the crowd signals the seriousness of the conflict, and how does Jesus respond to it?

Accepted Answer

The crowd picks up stones “again,” signaling a repeated move from argument to attempted violence (v. 31). Jesus responds by forcing the issue into the open: he reminds them he has shown “many good works” that come “from my Father,” and asks which specific work justifies stoning (v. 32). This response shifts the focus from raw anger to reasons and evidence. It also frames the works as not merely impressive acts but as actions connected to the Father, which matters for the later claim about mutual unity (v. 38).

Question 2

How do Jesus’ opponents define the real issue, and what does that reveal about their view of Jesus?

Accepted Answer

They explicitly say the stoning is not because of a good work but because of blasphemy (v. 33). They define blasphemy as this: Jesus is a man who is “making himself God.” That tells the reader they have heard Jesus’ words (including his claim of unity with the Father just before this scene) as more than a prophetic message or moral teaching. In their view, his speech crosses a boundary between human and divine status. The conflict is not over whether his deeds are “good” but over what his identity claim implies.

Question 3

What Scripture does Jesus cite, and what point does he make from it in the moment?

Accepted Answer

Jesus cites a line from the Psalms: “I said, you are gods” (v. 34). He then argues that Scripture used this kind of language for certain people “to whom the word of God came,” and he adds the premise that “Scripture can’t be broken” (v. 35). His immediate point is a consistency challenge: if their own sacred text can use such terminology in a real context, then branding Jesus a blasphemer simply for saying “I am the Son of God” is not as straightforward as they claim (v. 36).

Question 4

Who are “them” that Scripture called “gods,” according to Jesus’ description, and why does that detail matter?

Accepted Answer

Jesus identifies “them” as people “to whom the word of God came” (v. 35). He does not fully explain the group in this exchange, but his description implies they are human recipients of God’s word—figures with some recognized role or responsibility connected to God’s communication and authority. That detail matters because Jesus uses it as a comparison point: if Scripture can use elevated terms for such recipients, then the accusation of blasphemy against Jesus needs more careful argument—especially since Jesus claims a higher authorization than mere reception of a message: the Father “sanctified and sent” him (v. 36).

Question 5

What does Jesus claim about his own status in relation to the Father in verses 36–38?

Accepted Answer

Jesus describes himself as the one “whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world” (v. 36), language that presents him as specially set apart and commissioned. He also states his own claim in dispute: “I am the Son of God” (v. 36). Then he appeals to his works as a test case: if he does not do the Father’s works, he should not be believed; but if he does them, the works should be credited as evidence (vv. 37–38). The intended conclusion is relational: “the Father is in me, and I in the Father” (v. 38).

Question 6

How does Jesus connect “works” and “words” as evidence in this dispute?

Accepted Answer

Jesus does not treat works and words as competing sources of truth; he ties them together. First, he points to the works as “from my Father” (v. 32), implying they reflect the Father’s action and approval. Then he offers a conditional test: if he lacks the Father’s works, his claim should not be accepted (v. 37). But if the works are present, they carry evidential weight even for people who distrust his personal testimony (v. 38). In other words, deeds can function as public confirmation of the meaning of his words about his relationship to the Father.

Question 7

How does the scene end, and what does that suggest about the immediate outcome of Jesus’ argument?

Accepted Answer

The scene ends without agreement or resolution. After Jesus’ scriptural reply and appeal to works, his opponents “sought again to seize him” (v. 39). The conflict escalates from an attempted stoning to an attempt to arrest, suggesting they remain unconvinced—or at least unwilling to accept his framing. Jesus then escapes their grasp (“he went forth out of their hand,” v. 39), which keeps the larger dispute in John’s Gospel moving forward rather than concluding here. The ending implies that the argument has not dissolved the hostility, even if it has exposed the stakes more clearly.
