Jesus frames the coming betrayal as something he has anticipated and spoken about in advance, shaping how the disciples should interpret what happens next. Verse 20 also keeps the focus from collapsing into fear by restating the ongoing mission that will continue through those Jesus sends.
Historical Context
The setting is a meal shared by Jesus and his closest followers in Jerusalem during a major Jewish festival period, when the city’s population swelled and tensions could run high. Meals carried strong expectations of loyalty and protection; betrayal by a table companion was especially shocking. Jesus’ words assume a shared reverence for Israel’s Scriptures as a guide to understanding present events, including the idea that earlier stories and prayers can echo in later crises. The language about being “sent” also fits common first-century patterns of authorized representatives acting on behalf of a superior.
Theological Significance
Jesus draws a boundary inside the group of disciples: his earlier words are not equally true of everyone present. He also claims personal knowledge of “whom I have chosen,” and he frames the coming betrayal as fitting a scriptural pattern of a trusted table-companion turning against him.

Finally, v. 20 sets the betrayal inside a larger story of ongoing mission: receiving Jesus’ authorized messenger counts as receiving Jesus; receiving Jesus counts as receiving the One who sent him. In other words, the chain of representation is meant to hold even when the community faces internal failure.
Who is included in “whom I have chosen.” Some read “chosen” here as Jesus’ selection of the twelve as a group for a role, even including the betrayer in that outward circle. Others read it as selection in a deeper sense that excludes the betrayer, taking v. 18 (“not of you all”) to signal that one present was never truly part of what Jesus’ words promise.
What “I AM” emphasizes. Many understand “I AM” mainly as a strong identity claim in John’s storyline, echoing God’s self-identification in Israel’s Scriptures (compare Exodus 3:14). Others take it more broadly as assurance of Jesus’ reliability and authority (“I am the one I claim to be”), without making the focus rest on that specific echo.
How “fulfilled” relates to intention. Some take “that the scripture may be fulfilled” to mean the betrayal happens within God’s settled plan. Others stress that Jesus is interpreting the betrayal through Scripture as a recognized pattern—Scripture “fits” what happens—without implying that Scripture caused the betrayer’s choice.
Why the disagreement exists The passage makes several strong statements (Jesus “knows,” Scripture is “fulfilled,” the aim is belief in “I AM”) but does not spell out how divine purpose and human betrayal relate, or what level of belonging “chosen” refers to. John’s Gospel also uses “I AM” language in more than one way, so readers weigh the phrase differently based on wider context.
