Question 1

What reasons do the disciples give for concluding that Jesus “came forth from God” (vv. 29–30)?

Accepted Answer

They point to two features of Jesus’ speech and knowledge. First, they say he is now speaking “plainly” rather than using indirect sayings, which makes them feel they finally grasp what he means. Second, they claim Jesus “knows all things” and does not need anyone to question him. That perceived all-knowing insight becomes their evidence that he “came forth from God.” The logic is: plain clarity plus extraordinary knowledge implies a divine origin, so their belief is anchored in what they think they now understand about Jesus’ insight and source.

Question 2

How does Jesus’ question “Do you now believe?” function in the flow of the paragraph (v. 31)?

Accepted Answer

The question pushes back against the disciples’ confident “now we know.” It does not explicitly deny that they believe, but it challenges whether their belief is as settled as they assume. In context, it introduces Jesus’ immediate prediction that their loyalty will fail under pressure (“you will be scattered… and will leave me alone”). So the question works like a diagnostic: their certainty is about to be tested by events. It marks a shift from their self-assessment (“we know”) to Jesus’ assessment of what is coming and what their belief will look like then.

Question 3

What does Jesus predict will happen to the disciples, and how specific is his description (v. 32)?

Accepted Answer

Jesus predicts a near and disruptive moment: the “hour” is coming and is already arriving when the disciples will be “scattered,” with each going “to his own,” and they will “leave” Jesus. The description is broad rather than naming individuals or details, but it is specific about the relational outcome—abandonment and dispersal. The language suggests a sudden fracture of the group under stress, not a planned parting. The emphasis falls on the contrast between their current united confidence and their imminent divided flight.

Question 4

How can Jesus say he will be left “alone” and then immediately say he is “not alone” (v. 32)?

Accepted Answer

The two statements refer to different kinds of presence. “You will… leave me alone” describes the disciples’ action: they will abandon him so that, humanly speaking, he will be without his followers. “Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me” corrects the deeper reality: even if his closest companions scatter, his relationship with the Father remains intact. The verse holds together real human abandonment and real divine companionship. It also prepares for v. 33 by linking the Father’s presence with the possibility of peace “in” Jesus.

Question 5

According to v. 33, what is the stated purpose of Jesus’ words in this section?

Accepted Answer

Jesus explicitly gives an aim statement: “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace.” The purpose of the warning is not only to predict failure but to shape how the disciples understand the coming crisis. Peace is located “in me,” meaning it is tied to Jesus himself rather than to stable circumstances. The verse then clarifies that the circumstances will not be peaceful: “In the world you have oppression.” The purpose statement frames the whole paragraph as preparation for distress, not denial of it.

Question 6

What contrast does Jesus draw between “in me” and “in the world” (v. 33)?

Accepted Answer

Jesus sets up two spheres with different realities. “In me” is where peace is found; it is connected to Jesus’ own relationship with the Father and his stated victory. “In the world” is where oppression and pressure are experienced. The contrast is not that the disciples leave the world physically, but that their inner stability is grounded somewhere other than the world’s conditions. The verse holds both together: real trouble remains in the world, yet a different kind of peace is available in connection with Jesus.

Question 7

What does the line “I have overcome the world” contribute to Jesus’ claim about peace and trouble (v. 33)?

Accepted Answer

It functions as Jesus’ stated basis for why courage and peace make sense despite oppression. The verse does not explain the mechanism in detail here, but it presents Jesus’ victory over “the world” as already true in his speech (“I have overcome”). That claim re-frames the world’s pressure as not ultimate. It also ties back to the farewell context: the disciples’ scattering and the coming crisis will look like defeat, yet Jesus interprets the larger outcome as victory, which is meant to support peace “in me” rather than confidence in the disciples’ own steadiness.
