Question 1

What practical concern motivates the request made to Pilate in verse 31, and how does the text explain it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 31 gives a concrete reason: it is “Preparation,” and the goal is to prevent bodies from remaining on the cross during the Sabbath. The text adds that this Sabbath was “a special one,” which heightens the urgency. The request is specific: have the victims’ legs broken and have the bodies taken away. Nothing is said here about changing the verdict or reversing the execution; the focus is on timing and removal because the holy day is about to begin.

Question 2

How do verses 32–33 distinguish Jesus from the two others crucified with him?

Accepted Answer

The soldiers treat the two men the same way: they break their legs. When they come to Jesus, they do not do this, and the stated reason is observational: they “saw that he was already dead.” So the difference is not presented as a decision based on sympathy or policy, but as a response to what they perceive. The narrative slows down to highlight that Jesus’ body is handled differently at this point, and that difference becomes important for the later Scripture connections.

Question 3

What does verse 34 add to the account, and what details are emphasized?

Accepted Answer

Verse 34 reports an additional action after the decision not to break Jesus’ legs: one soldier pierces Jesus’ side with a spear. The text emphasizes immediacy and result: “immediately blood and water came out.” The verse does not explicitly explain the medical mechanism or the meaning of the blood and water; it simply presents it as a visible outcome connected to a deliberate act by the soldier. This becomes part of what the eyewitness is said to have seen and testified to.

Question 4

How does the narrator in verse 35 try to establish the reliability and purpose of the report?

Accepted Answer

Verse 35 shifts into direct narrator comment: “He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true.” The claim is not only that someone reports it, but that the report is based on seeing, and that the witness “knows” he tells the truth. The verse also states the intended effect: “that you also may believe.” So the passage ties its historical detail to the Gospel’s broader aim—presenting witness-based claims meant to produce belief.

Question 5

What relationship does verses 36–37 draw between the events and Scripture, and what parts of the event are linked?

Accepted Answer

Verses 36–37 explicitly say the events “happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled.” Then two connections are made. First, the fact that Jesus’ legs are not broken is linked to the line “A bone of him will not be broken.” Second, the piercing is linked to the line “They will look on him whom they pierced.” The passage does not identify the original settings of these quotations, but it clearly presents the unbroken bones and the piercing as fitting what Scripture anticipated.

Question 6

Based on verses 31–37 alone, what can be said with confidence about whether Jesus was dead before the spear thrust, and what is inferred rather than stated?

Accepted Answer

The explicit claim is that the soldiers saw Jesus was already dead (v.33), which is why they did not break his legs. The spear thrust happens afterward (v.34), and its result is described (blood and water). From this, many readers infer the passage is emphasizing confirmation of death, but the text does not spell that purpose out in so many words. It presents the sequence and the witness claim, leaving the reader to connect the dots about why these details matter.

Question 7

What does the phrase “special Sabbath” contribute to the scene, and what does the passage leave unclear?

Accepted Answer

“Special Sabbath” adds narrative pressure: it explains why the request to Pilate is urgent and why removal must happen before the holy day. It signals that this is not an ordinary week. At the same time, the passage does not define what makes it special—whether it is linked to a particular festival day, an especially important Sabbath during the feast, or something else. The meaning is clear at the level of urgency, but unclear at the level of precise calendar explanation.
