John 19:31–37 focuses on public, observable details around Jesus’ death. The stated reason for action is the approaching Sabbath: bodies are not to remain on the crosses. The soldiers therefore break the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus, but do not break Jesus’ legs because they see he is already dead. A soldier still pierces Jesus’ side, and the text stresses that blood and water come out immediately.

The narrator then steps forward to stress testimony: someone who “has seen” (having seen) is presented as a truthful witness, and the stated purpose is “that you also may believe.” The passage also explicitly claims these events correspond to “scripture,” including an unbroken-bone line and a pierced-one line.

Where interpretation differs

1) Who “the Jews” are in v.31. Some readings take the phrase broadly, as a general reference to Jewish people present. Other readings take it more narrowly, as a shorthand for certain Jerusalem leaders involved in the request to Pilate. Either way, the text’s explicit claim is that this group asks Pilate for leg-breaking and removal because of the Sabbath timing.

2) Why blood and water are highlighted (v.34). The text explicitly reports the physical result. From there, interpreters differ on what John is emphasizing:

• Some see it mainly as a sign that Jesus truly died (the body was not merely unconscious).
• Others think John is also highlighting symbolic meaning (for example, themes John develops elsewhere about life, cleansing, or Jesus’ gifts), while still assuming the event itself happened.

3) What makes the Sabbath “special.” The verse says it was a special Sabbath but does not fully explain why. Some understand this as the weekly Sabbath coinciding with a festival period; others see it as a particularly solemn day within that week. The text itself leaves the exact reason unstated.

Why the disagreement exists The narrative gives clear actions (request, leg-breaking, spear, result, testimony) but gives limited explanation for several labels and emphases (“the Jews,” “special Sabbath,” and the reason the author highlights blood and water). Also, when John says “scripture” is fulfilled, he quotes lines without naming their original contexts, which invites different proposals about which passages are most directly in view.

What this passage clearly contributes

• It presents Jesus’ death as already accomplished before the usual leg-breaking step, and it reports a further confirming act (the spear thrust) with an immediate physical outcome.
• It frames these details as grounded in eyewitness testimony, explicitly aiming at belief.
• It connects the manner of Jesus’ treatment in death (no broken bones; pierced) to Israel’s Scriptures, reinforcing that the crucifixion is not only a political execution but also an event John sees as fitting a larger scriptural storyline (scripture).
