Mary weeps, looks in, and speaks with angels Mary remains outside the tomb crying. While crying, she bends down to look into the tomb and sees two angels in white seated where Jesus’ body had been—one at the head and one at the feet. They ask why she is weeping. Mary answers with her present assumption: “they” have taken her Lord, and she does not know where “they” put him.
Mary sees Jesus but misidentifies him After speaking, Mary turns around and sees Jesus standing there, but she does not recognize him as Jesus. Jesus repeats the angels’ question, “Why are you weeping?” and adds, “Who are you looking for?” Mary’s answers show she is still searching for a body: she thinks he is the gardener and asks whether he carried the body away, offering to take it.
Recognition through being addressed Jesus says her name, “Mary.” That personal address triggers recognition: she turns and responds “Rhabbouni,” explained as “Teacher.” The scene pivots from searching for a corpse to meeting a known person.
Literary Context
This scene comes right after the discovery of the empty tomb and the earlier visit by Peter and the other disciple, who then leave (20:1–10). The narrative slows down to focus on Mary’s grief, confusion, and then recognition, moving from “missing body” to “living person.” The repeated question “Why are you weeping?” links the angelic and Jesus encounters and keeps attention on Mary’s misunderstanding. The passage also sets up the larger post-resurrection sequence in the chapter, where others will also move from uncertainty to recognition and testimony (20:19–29).
Historical Context
The setting is a burial place outside the city, in a Jewish context where care for a body and knowledge of burial location mattered deeply for family and followers. Mary’s assumption that someone “took” the body fits fears of disturbance, removal, or reburial, and her desire to retrieve it reflects expected devotion to proper burial practices. The mention of angels and the way Jesus is initially unrecognized reflect common ancient story patterns of heavenly messengers and surprising recognition. Socially, Mary’s role as the first reporter of what she saw places her as an active witness within a small circle of followers under Roman rule in Judea.

The passage also presents Mary as the first messenger to the disciples in this scene. Her report has two parts: she has seen “the Lord,” and she relays Jesus’ message about his coming ascent to the Father.
1) Why Mary does not recognize Jesus at first. Some readers think the main reason is ordinary: tears, low light, and expectation (she is looking for a body, not a person). Others think the text implies more than circumstance—God’s action or Jesus’ changed, resurrection appearance that is not immediately identifiable.
2) What Jesus means by “Don’t touch me.” Some take it as a straightforward prohibition on physical contact at that moment (she must not hold on to him). Others read it as “Don’t keep clinging to me,” meaning she should not try to keep Jesus present in the old way because the relationship is about to change as he returns to the Father.
3) How “not yet ascended” fits with the rest of the chapter. Many read it as a timeline statement: Jesus’ return to the Father has begun but is not complete. Others think it mainly explains why Mary must not treat this meeting as the final, settled mode of Jesus’ presence.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives the key statements but not the full background: it does not explain why recognition fails, what kind of touching is involved, or how the “ascend” timetable connects to later resurrection appearances. Those gaps lead interpreters to weigh narrative clues (Mary’s tears, mistaken identity, Jesus’ wording) differently.
What this passage clearly contributes The text strongly emphasizes movement from misunderstanding to recognition: Mary’s “someone took him” becomes “I have seen the Lord.” It also links recognition to Jesus’ initiative (“Mary”) and to a re-framing of Jesus’ status after resurrection: he speaks of going to “my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.” Explicitly, Mary’s role is to carry this announcement to the disciples, placing her testimony at the start of the chapter’s wider pattern of resurrection appearances and reports (John 20:11–18).
