Thomas refuses secondhand certainty Thomas, identified as one of the Twelve and also called Didymus, was not present when Jesus previously came to the disciples. When the others tell him, “We have seen the Lord,” Thomas sets strict conditions for acceptance: he must see the nail marks in Jesus’ hands and physically check the wound in Jesus’ side. Without that, he says he will not believe.
Jesus returns in the same closed setting After eight days, the disciples are again gathered indoors and Thomas is now with them. Although the doors are locked, Jesus comes, stands among them, and repeats the greeting of peace. The locked doors emphasize the controlled, private setting and Jesus’ unexpected arrival within it.
