Some read world as every individual without exception, stressing the breadth of God’s love and the openness of “whoever.” Others read “world” as humanity in general (or even a rebellious realm) without specifying that every individual is equally included in the same way, stressing that the word can carry a moral tone in John.

What “so loved” emphasizes. Some take “so” mainly as intensity (“God loved a lot”). Others take it mainly as the manner shown (“God loved in this way: he gave his Son”). Both fit the sentence; the verse itself highlights love shown through a concrete gift.

How “judged already” works in time. Some understand it as a present verdict that is already in effect and will be confirmed later. Others understand it as describing the person’s standing now (because of rejecting the Son), without trying to map the full timing of final judgment. The text is clear that the “already” is connected to refusal to believe.

Why the disagreement exists John uses compact, weighty words that carry a range of meanings (especially world and “so”). Also, the passage speaks in both mission terms (God sent the Son) and verdict terms (“not judged / judged already”), which raises natural questions about scope and timing that the verses do not fully spell out.
