Personal exposure and truthful speech Jesus tells the woman to call her husband and return. She answers that she has no husband. Jesus affirms that her statement is accurate and then reveals that she has had five husbands and is now living with a man who is not her husband. The effect is that Jesus both draws out her words and shows knowledge about her life that she did not volunteer.
From personal history to the worship dispute The woman responds by calling Jesus “sir” and concluding that he is a prophet. Instead of staying on her relationships, she turns to a community-level question: her ancestors worshiped on “this mountain,” but Jews insist Jerusalem is where people ought to worship. The conversation moves from her private story to the public disagreement between peoples.
Worship’s location relativized; worship’s nature clarified Jesus asks her to trust his word: a time is coming when worship of the Father will not be tied to either the mountain or Jerusalem. Literary Context
This scene sits in John’s larger pattern of Jesus meeting individuals and taking ordinary topics into deeper questions about God and life (as with Nicodemus in John 3). In John 4, Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman at a well, beginning with water and moving toward a gift that satisfies more deeply. Verses 16–26 form the middle and climax of the dialogue: personal history leads into a dispute about worship, and that dispute becomes the doorway for Jesus to speak about the kind of worship God seeks and the timing of a coming change. The section ends with a direct self-disclosure by Jesus.
Historical Context
The conversation assumes a tense relationship between Samaritans and Jews, including disagreement over legitimate worship locations. Samaritans associated worship with Mount Gerizim, while Jews centered worship at the temple in Jerusalem. A woman speaking alone with a man in public could be socially delicate, and her marital history suggests vulnerability and social complication. Jesus’ statement that an “hour” is coming uses time language familiar in John to mark a major shift on the horizon. The woman’s mention of “Messiah” shows expectation of a coming figure who would clarify disputed religious questions.

Messiah expectation and Jesus’ self-identification The woman says she knows Messiah (called Christ) is coming and that he will explain everything. Jesus responds directly that he is the one speaking to her. The dialogue reaches a clear point of identification rather than remaining at the level of hints or debate.
Jesus deliberately turns the conversation from “living water” to the woman’s personal history (vv.16–18). He draws out a truthful statement from her (“I have no husband”) and then discloses that her situation is more complicated than she has said. The text presents this as accurate knowledge that changes how she evaluates him (vv.19–20).
The woman then shifts from her private life to a public, long-running dispute: where worship “ought” to happen—on her people’s mountain or in Jerusalem (v.20). Jesus answers by relocating the question. He says a time is coming when worship of the Father will not be tied to either site (v.21).
Jesus also makes a real contrast between Samaritan and Jewish worship: “you” worship what you do not know; “we” worship what we know; and “salvation is from the Jews” (v.22). Yet the main direction of his answer is forward: “true worshipers” worship “in spirit and truth,” because God is spirit and the Father seeks such worshipers (vv.23–24). The scene ends with the woman naming the coming Messiah as the one who will clarify matters, and Jesus identifying himself as that Messiah (vv.25–26).
1) How Jesus knows her history (vv.17–18). Some read this as supernatural insight that signals Jesus’ special authority. Others allow that Jesus could have learned her situation by ordinary means, though the story’s effect still depends on his accurate exposure of what she did not volunteer.
2) What “in spirit and truth” means (vv.23–24). Some understand “spirit” mainly as the inner, sincere human side of worship (not mere external location or ritual), and “truth” as worship aligned with what God has revealed. Others think “spirit” points more directly to God’s Spirit enabling worship, with “truth” pointing to the reality disclosed through Jesus.
3) The meaning of “salvation is from the Jews” (v.22). Some hear a priority claim about Jewish religious superiority. Others read it as a source-and-history claim: God’s saving work and promises come through Israel’s story, Scriptures, and Messiah, even as worship is about to be opened beyond one people and one place.
John’s narrative gives short, dense phrases without pausing to define them (“in spirit and truth,” “hour…now is,” “salvation is from the Jews”). Those phrases can naturally be read in more than one direction: inward sincerity vs God’s Spirit; “truth” as accuracy vs “truth” as the reality disclosed through Jesus; “from the Jews” as ranking vs historical channel. The immediate context pushes toward a shift away from holy sites, but it does not spell out every implication.
