Verse by Verse
Return to Galilee, welcomed for what was seen Jesus leaves after two days and goes into Galilee. The narrator adds a saying: a prophet lacks honor in his own homeland, creating tension with the next line where Galileans welcome him. Their welcome is explained: they had seen what he did in Jerusalem at the festival, since they had been there too.
Cana revisited, a new crisis introduced Jesus comes again to Cana, explicitly linked to the earlier water-to-wine event. A royal official is introduced whose son is sick in Capernaum, setting up a problem that spans two locations.
The request, the challenge, and a word trusted Hearing Jesus is back in Galilee, the official comes and repeatedly urges him to come down and heal his son, who is near death. Jesus responds with a general-sounding complaint that people will not trust unless they see “signs and wonders.” The official presses again, focused on time running out. Jesus answers with a simple directive and assurance: go; your son lives. The man trusts Jesus’ spoken word and starts home.
Literary Context
This scene follows Jesus’ time in Samaria, where many respond to his words without needing a display (4:39–42). The move back to Galilee continues the travel narrative and sets a contrast: Galileans “receive” Jesus, yet their welcome is linked to what they saw at the festival in Jerusalem. The Cana setting recalls the earlier Cana episode (2:1–11), and the narrator frames this healing as another “sign.” The story is built around distance and timing: Jesus does not travel to the child, but his spoken assurance becomes the turning point that is later confirmed.
Historical Context
Galilee and Capernaum were towns in Roman-ruled Palestine, where travel between regions (Judea, Samaria, Galilee) was common but socially layered. Pilgrimage festivals in Jerusalem drew crowds from Galilee, so people could have witnessed remarkable events there and carried reports home. The “royal official” likely represents a person connected to regional administration, used to authority, status, and urgent access to help. Illness in a household could quickly become life-threatening, and seeking a well-known healer would be a practical response. The story assumes recognizable routes: Cana in Galilee and Capernaum down by the lake.
