Question 1

What does John say is the reason the crowd follows Jesus in verses 1–2?

Accepted Answer

John gives a specific motive: the crowd follows “because they saw the signs” Jesus was doing for sick people (v.2). That explanation is more focused than simple curiosity or general admiration. It also frames the crowd’s interest as rooted in visible results—healings that can be witnessed. In this passage, the crowd is not yet described as responding to Jesus’ teaching; the emphasis is on what they have seen him do. This sets up tension later in the chapter about how people interpret Jesus when their attention is driven by what they can get or observe.

Question 2

How does the Passover note in verse 4 function in this scene?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 briefly states that Passover was near. At minimum, it locates the story in time and signals a season when many people traveled, which helps the large crowd feel realistic. It also cues readers to hear later “bread” language with festival associations in mind, since Passover is tied to remembrance and shared meals. In these verses, John does not explain the festival in detail, but he intentionally places the scene near that calendar moment. The note works like a contextual marker that prepares for the larger discussion and actions that follow.

Question 3

What does Jesus’ question to Philip focus on, and what problem does it create in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Jesus asks a practical question: where to buy bread so the people can eat (v.5). The focus is not on whether the crowd should be fed but on how it could be done. Narratively, the question creates a problem that the disciples cannot solve by ordinary means: a huge group, limited time, and limited resources. The reader is also positioned to wonder what Jesus will do, because the scene pauses on logistics before any action happens. The question functions as a hinge between seeing the crowd and the coming provision.

Question 4

According to verse 6, why does Jesus ask Philip, and what does that tell the reader about Jesus?

Accepted Answer

John directly explains that Jesus says this “to test him,” and adds that Jesus “knew what he would do” (v.6). That means the question is not asked out of ignorance or uncertainty. Instead, it probes Philip and, by extension, exposes how a disciple evaluates the situation. At the same time, the comment tells the reader that Jesus is acting with intention: he already has a plan. The narrator’s aside shapes interpretation by preventing the reader from viewing Jesus as trapped by circumstances or dependent on Philip’s answer.

Question 5

What does Philip’s answer in verse 7 emphasize, and what perspective does it reveal?

Accepted Answer

Philip answers with a cost estimate: even two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for everyone to receive even a small amount (v.7). This emphasizes the size of the crowd and the inadequacy of normal purchasing power. His perspective is pragmatic and limited to what money and markets can supply. The answer also sharpens the crisis: it is not merely inconvenient but seemingly impossible by typical means. John uses Philip’s calculation to set up a contrast between human assessment (“not sufficient”) and what Jesus will do next.

Question 6

What explicit details show the crowd’s scale and movement, and why do they matter?

Accepted Answer

John uses repeated language: “a great multitude” follows (v.2) and is also “coming to him” (v.5). Jesus “lifts up his eyes” and sees them approaching, which gives the sense of an advancing mass rather than a small group already seated. These details matter because they justify the bread problem: feeding a few would be manageable, but feeding a great crowd is not. They also build suspense. The situation develops from travel and observation (vv.1–2) to an imminent need pressing in on Jesus and the disciples (v.5).
