A hard saying and a challenge Many of Jesus’ disciples say his teaching is “hard” and ask who can accept it. Jesus is aware of their quiet complaining and asks whether his words are making them fall away. He then raises a further question: what would they do if they saw the Son of Man ascending to where he was before, implying that an even more challenging reality could confront them.
Words, life, and unbelief Jesus contrasts “spirit” and “flesh,” saying the spirit gives life while the flesh is of no help. He says his words are “spirit” and “life,” tying the issue to how his message is received. Yet he states that some among them do not believe, and the narrator adds that Jesus already knew who did not believe and who would betray him. Jesus repeats a key point: coming to him depends on what the Father grants.

Literary Context
This scene closes the wider exchange in John 6 that follows the feeding of the crowd and Jesus’ extended teaching about what he offers and what it means to receive it. The focus narrows from the crowd to “many of his disciples,” and finally to the Twelve, highlighting different levels of response. The passage also prepares for later conflict by introducing betrayal within Jesus’ inner circle. The logic is narrative: hard teaching produces complaint, complaint prompts Jesus’ clarification, the clarification exposes unbelief, and the result is separation between those who leave and those who stay.
Historical Context
The setting assumes a first-century Jewish world in Roman-ruled Galilee and Judea, where teachers gathered followers who could choose to continue or stop following. A group like “the Twelve” suggests an identifiable inner circle within a larger band of learners. Public teaching that sounded offensive or confusing could quickly thin a following, especially if it challenged expectations about a leader’s role or language about life and God’s purposes. The mention of betrayal reflects the real social risks around popular movements: loyalty could fracture from misunderstanding, fear, ambition, or pressure from outside authorities.

Chosen Twelve, yet one betrayer Jesus replies that he chose the Twelve, yet one of them is “a devil,” introducing a sharp contrast between selection and inner opposition. The narrator explains that Jesus meant Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, and notes that Judas would betray Jesus even though he was one of the Twelve.
This scene shows a turning point: some people who had been following Jesus decide his teaching is too difficult and stop traveling with him (vv. 60, 66). Jesus does not soften the moment; he names their inner complaint and asks whether his words are becoming a cause for them to stumble (v. 61).
Jesus frames the issue around how his message is received. He says, “The Spirit gives life,” “the flesh profits nothing,” and that his words are “spirit” and “life” (v. 63). The narrator and Jesus both state that unbelief is present even among “disciples,” and that Jesus knows this from the start, including the coming betrayal (vv. 64, 71).
The passage also highlights two different responses to the same teaching: leaving (many disciples) and staying with a confessed loyalty (the Twelve, voiced by Peter) (vv. 66–69). Peter’s answer centers on Jesus as the unique source of “the words of eternal life” (v. 68).
Two main questions often draw different readings.
First, what Jesus means by “the flesh profits nothing” (v. 63). Some take it as a broad statement about human ability or merely human-level thinking being unable to grasp or produce the life Jesus is talking about. Others take it more narrowly as rejecting a literalistic misunderstanding of his earlier “eat/drink” language in John 6, emphasizing that his life-giving message is received through the Spirit rather than by physical consumption.
Second, how to understand “no one can come to me unless it is given…by my Father” (v. 65). Many agree the text presents God’s initiative as necessary. Differences arise over whether this “giving” is an inner enabling that decisively results in coming, or a granting that makes coming genuinely possible without removing human refusal.
The passage uses brief, dense contrasts (“Spirit”/“flesh”) and places them inside a longer discourse whose earlier metaphors can be read in more than one way. Also, v. 65 states a strong dependence on the Father’s granting but does not spell out how that relates to the human side of believing or not believing; the narrative simply shows both divine knowledge and real human departure.
Explicitly, it shows that Jesus expects his followers to face teachings that sift commitment, and that some who are called “disciples” may still not believe (vv. 60, 64, 66). It also connects “eternal life” to Jesus’ words (v. 68) and portrays faith as more than momentary enthusiasm—it persists when alternatives are considered (vv. 67–69). Finally, it introduces the tension that chosen proximity to Jesus (the Twelve) can still coexist with inner opposition and betrayal (vv. 70–71), setting up later events in the story.
