Question 1

In vv. 39–40, what evidence does Jesus use to challenge the claim “Abraham is our father”?

Accepted Answer

Jesus does not argue by genealogy; he argues by resemblance. He says that if they were truly Abraham’s “children,” their actions would look like Abraham’s. Then he points to a specific action and motive: they are seeking to kill him even though he has told them truth that he heard from God. Jesus treats that combination—truth from God met with murder-intent—as something Abraham would not do. So the passage defines “children of Abraham” in terms of Abraham-like behavior rather than mere ancestral claim.

Question 2

What role does the charge “We were not born of sexual immorality” (v. 41) play in the argument?

Accepted Answer

In the flow of the debate, the statement functions as a defense of legitimacy and belonging. Jesus has said, “You do the works of your father,” implying their actions reveal a different “father.” They respond by denying any shameful origin and by tightening their claim: they have “one Father—God.” The line is not mainly about providing biographical details; it is a rhetorical move in a public dispute about who truly belongs to God’s family and who has a legitimate spiritual identity.

Question 3

According to vv. 42–43, how does Jesus connect God’s fatherhood with love for Jesus and with understanding his speech?

Accepted Answer

Jesus makes a conditional claim: if God were their Father, love for Jesus would follow. He grounds that in his origin and mission—he “came from God” and was sent by God rather than acting on his own initiative. Then he links their lack of understanding to a deeper problem: they “cannot hear” his word. In the passage, love for Jesus, recognition of his God-sent mission, and real comprehension are intertwined; refusal to receive his word explains their misunderstanding.

Question 4

In vv. 44–45, what specific traits does Jesus associate with “your father, the devil,” and how do those traits relate to his opponents’ behavior?

Accepted Answer

Jesus connects their “father” to desires and actions: they want to do what that father wants. He then describes this father as marked by murder “from the beginning” and by not standing in truth, because truth is absent in him. Lying is portrayed as native to him—he speaks “from his own,” as both liar and “father” of lies. Jesus then ties this directly to the present conflict: because Jesus tells the truth, they do not believe him. Their rejection of truth fits the described pattern.

Question 5

How do vv. 46–47 support Jesus’ claim that their unbelief is not based on proven wrongdoing in him?

Accepted Answer

Jesus issues a public challenge: “Which of you convicts me of sin?” The point is that his opponents are not presenting a demonstrated moral failure that would discredit his message. He then presses the logic: if he tells the truth, why do they not believe? The closing principle explains the division: the one who is “of God” hears God’s words; their failure to hear shows they are “not of God.” The passage frames unbelief as a hearing/identity issue rather than an evidence-based refutation of Jesus’ integrity.

Question 6

What two “tests” for true spiritual parentage appear in this passage, and how are they related?

Accepted Answer

First, there is a “works” test: true children resemble their father (Abraham-like works versus the works of another father). Jesus applies this by contrasting Abraham with their intent to kill a truth-speaker from God. Second, there is a “hearing/love” test: if God were their Father, they would love Jesus and be able to receive his word; those “of God” hear God’s words. These tests converge because, in the passage, hearing the truth produces alignment with God and love for the one God sent, while refusal of truth produces the opposite pattern.

Question 7

What does the passage mean by “hear” (vv. 43, 47) when it says they cannot hear and that those of God hear God’s words?

Accepted Answer

“Hear” in this section means more than audibility. It includes grasping and receiving Jesus’ message as what it claims to be—truth from God. Jesus explains their lack of understanding by saying they cannot “hear” his word, and he ends by stating that those “of God” hear God’s words, while they do not hear because they are not “of God.” So “hearing” functions as a marker of belonging and responsiveness: the capacity or readiness to receive God’s message as true.
