Why include animals. Some read the commands about animals as straightforwardly literal: the whole city’s life—people and livestock—participates in the fast and mourning to show total distress. What it means that God “turns/repents.” Many readers take the language as describing a real change in God’s action toward Nineveh (from destroying to sparing) in response to their change. Others emphasize that the change is in God’s dealings, not in God’s character: the passage describes God withholding announced judgment when people abandon violence.
