Question 1

Who issues the proclamation in Jonah 3:7, and how is its authority described?

Accepted Answer

The text says the proclamation is made and spread through Nineveh “by the decree of the king and his nobles.” That describes an official, top-level action rather than a private religious movement. The combination of king plus nobles suggests broad leadership backing, not just one person’s impulse. The authority matters because it helps explain how the response becomes citywide and coordinated. The passage’s focus is less on the mechanics of government and more on how leadership turns fear into organized action that reaches every layer of the city.

Question 2

What specific actions are commanded in verses 7–8, and how do they move from outward to inward?

Accepted Answer

The decree first requires a total fast: no eating and no drinking, for humans and also animals (v. 7). Then it requires sackcloth for both people and animals (v. 8a), a public sign of mourning. Next it calls for urgent prayer: they must “cry mightily to God” (v. 8a). Finally it demands moral change: each person must turn from evil and from violence (v. 8b). The sequence moves from visible, communal signs to direct appeal to God, and then to concrete behavioral change.

Question 3

How does the passage define what “turning” looks like for the people of Nineveh?

Accepted Answer

The turning is not left vague. The decree commands each person to turn from “his evil way,” and it highlights “the violence that is in his hands” (v. 8). That points to wrongdoing expressed in actions people can stop, not only feelings they can display. The wording also personalizes the command (“everyone”), even though the decree is communal. So, within the passage, repentance includes both religious expression (prayer, mourning) and a measurable change in social behavior, especially ending violent practices.

Question 4

What does “cry mightily to God” add to the picture, beyond fasting and sackcloth?

Accepted Answer

Fasting and sackcloth are public signals of distress, but they could remain only external. “Cry mightily to God” adds direct engagement: a desperate, urgent appeal to God rather than a mere performance of mourning. It also clarifies that the decree is aimed at God’s attention, not only at shaping public morale. In the flow of the text, prayer sits between outward signs and moral change, linking the city’s public humiliation with the inward posture of asking for mercy and the outward behavior of abandoning violence.

Question 5

What is the function of the phrase “Who knows?” in verse 9?

Accepted Answer

“Who knows?” signals uncertainty and humility. The leaders do not treat God as predictable or controllable, and they do not claim they have earned safety by their actions. Instead, they hold out hope that God may “turn” and turn away from fierce anger so they do not perish. This keeps the tension in the story: the city responds seriously, but the outcome is still in God’s hands. The phrase also prevents the decree from sounding like a guarantee or a bargain.

Question 6

How does verse 9 connect the people’s “turning” with God’s possible “turning”?

Accepted Answer

The decree calls the people to turn from evil and violence (v. 8), then hopes God might also “turn” and turn away from fierce anger (v. 9). The passage sets up a mirrored idea: human change is matched by the possibility of divine relenting from announced judgment. Importantly, the text presents this as hope rather than certainty. Even so, the logic of the proclamation assumes a meaningful relationship between abandoning violence and the possibility that destruction will not happen.
