3:7Meaning
A public decree demands total fasting The king and his nobles issue an official proclamation throughout Nineveh. The command is sweeping: no person and no animal—whether individual, herd, or flock—is to taste food or even drink water. The point is a complete, citywide fast that visibly signals emergency and submission.
Unit 2 (v. 8a): Outward mourning and urgent appeal
The decree adds a second visible action: both people and animals are to be covered with sackcloth. Along with this, the people are told to cry out strongly to God, treating the situation as desperate and requiring earnest pleading rather than casual words.
Unit 3 (v. 8b): A demanded change in conduct, especially violence
The proclamation insists that each person must turn from his evil way. It specifies “the violence that is in his hands,” pointing to wrongdoing expressed in concrete actions—harmful practices the people can stop, not merely feelings they can display.
