Question 1

What reasons does Rahab give for asking the men to swear to protect her family?

Accepted Answer

Rahab gives two main reasons in the text. First, she asks for an oath “by Yahweh,” which treats the promise as more than a casual agreement; it is made accountable to Israel’s God (v.12). Second, she appeals to reciprocity: she has already “dealt kindly” with the men by sheltering and protecting them, so she asks them to “deal kindly” with her father’s household in return (v.12). Her request is not presented as a general plea for mercy but as a response to a specific act of loyalty she has already performed.

Question 2

What does Rahab mean by asking for her “father’s house” to be protected?

Accepted Answer

In the passage, “my father’s house” is explained by the list that follows: her father, mother, brothers, sisters, and “all that they have” (v.13). So the phrase refers to her wider family unit and everyone closely bound to it. The focus is on preserving the whole household as a social unit, not only sparing Rahab personally. Her wording also shows she expects the coming attack to be deadly for the city, so she is seeking a defined group exemption when Jericho is overrun.

Question 3

What specific outcomes does Rahab request in verses 12–13?

Accepted Answer

Rahab asks for three linked outcomes. (1) She wants the men to swear an oath by Yahweh that they will show “kindness” to her father’s house, matching the kindness she showed them (v.12). (2) She asks for a “true token,” meaning a dependable pledge or sign that confirms the oath is real and will be kept (v.12). (3) She spells out the practical result she needs: her family and household must be kept alive and their lives “delivered…from death” (v.13).

Question 4

What condition do the men attach to their promise, and how does it relate to Rahab’s earlier actions?

Accepted Answer

The men’s stated condition is secrecy: “if you don’t utter this our business” (v.14). In other words, their protection promise is tied to her not disclosing their mission. This condition matches the immediate situation: Rahab has already protected them by hiding them and diverting the king’s search (Josh 2:1–11), and ongoing protection requires continued confidentiality. The men’s answer shows that the agreement is mutual—she provides protection through discretion, and they provide protection at the time of conquest.

Question 5

How does the men’s phrase “Our life for yours” function in the conversation?

Accepted Answer

“Our life for yours” (v.14) functions as strong assurance. It communicates that they are staking themselves on keeping the agreement, not merely offering a vague promise. In context, it is part of their acceptance of her request: they commit to her survival and her household’s survival, provided she keeps the secrecy condition. The statement also underlines the seriousness of the situation; if the agreement fails, it is not a minor breach but a matter of life and death for both parties within the narrative’s logic.

Question 6

How is Yahweh’s role described in verses 12–14, and what is implied (without being directly stated)?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Yahweh appears in two ways. Rahab asks the men to swear “by Yahweh” (v.12), making him the witness to the oath. The men also say, “when Yahweh gives us the land” (v.14), treating the conquest as something Yahweh will grant. Implied (but not directly stated) is that the promise’s timing and success depend on Israel’s expected victory. The text does not spell out a full theology of judgment or deliverance here; it simply places the oath and the conquest under Yahweh’s name and agency.

Question 7

What open questions does the phrase “true token” raise within this unit (without answering them yet)?

Accepted Answer

Within vv.12–14, “true token” raises the question of what form of confirmation Rahab is asking for and when she expects it. The phrase itself suggests something reliable—some pledge that secures trust beyond words alone (v.12). But the unit does not identify whether the token is an immediate object, a sign to be used later during the attack, or a broader guarantee. The men do not answer the “token” request in these verses, so the reader is left to watch how (and whether) the narrative supplies a confirming sign afterward.
