Verses 17–21 function as the practical, spoken “contract” that turns her request into a defined set of terms: what sign will identify the house, who must be present, and what would cancel the agreement. The narrative then moves toward the scouts’ return and report to Joshua (2:22–24).
Historical Context
The scene assumes a fortified city with houses built into or near the city wall, where a window could open outward and a rope could be used for escape. In that setting, identification of a specific household during an attack would be difficult, so a clear external marker makes sense. Household identity is also central: “father’s household” reflects an extended family unit living and acting together.
