Question 1

What do the scouts mean when they say they will be “guiltless” of Rahab’s oath (v. 17)?

Accepted Answer

In context, the scouts are not refusing the oath; they are defining limits on their responsibility. They explain that they will be “guiltless” (free from blame/responsibility) if Rahab does not meet the stated conditions that follow (vv. 18–20). The next verses clarify what “guiltless” looks like in practice: if a person leaves the house, the scouts are not responsible for what happens; if Rahab reveals their mission, the oath no longer binds them. So “guiltless” functions as boundary-setting for a promise made under dangerous conditions.

Question 2

List the specific requirements the scouts give Rahab in vv. 18–20.

Accepted Answer

The scouts give three main requirements. (1) Rahab must tie a scarlet cord in the window—the same window used to lower them down (v. 18). This is the external sign identifying the correct house. (2) She must gather her family into her house: father, mother, brothers, and all her father’s household (v. 18). This defines who will be included and locates them together. (3) She must keep the spies’ mission secret; if she “utters” their business, the scouts are free from the oath (v. 20).

Question 3

How does v. 19 describe the difference between being inside the house and outside it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 draws a sharp line: protection is tied to staying inside Rahab’s house. If someone goes out into the street, that person takes responsibility for the outcome (“his blood shall be on his head”), and the scouts remain guiltless. But if someone is inside with Rahab and is harmed, the scouts accept responsibility (“his blood shall be on our head”). The verse does not describe a general protection across the city; it describes a specific safe zone connected to a specific household location.

Question 4

What is the purpose of the scarlet cord according to the passage itself (v. 18)?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents the scarlet cord as a visible identifier for the correct house when Israel comes into the land. It must be placed in the window connected to the spies’ escape, anchoring the sign to a verifiable location. Given the setting (an attack on a fortified city), an external marker would help distinguish Rahab’s house from others. The text does not explicitly assign symbolic meaning to the color; its stated function is practical identification tied to the agreed terms.

Question 5

Who is included in “all your father’s household” (v. 18), and what is clear or unclear about that phrase?

Accepted Answer

What is clear is that the protected group is more than Rahab alone: it includes her parents, her brothers, and the larger family unit connected to her father (“all your father’s household”). In an ancient city, that likely means an extended family network—possibly including spouses, children, or dependents associated with that household. What is not spelled out is the exact boundary: the phrase does not list every category (for example, sisters, servants, or in-laws), so readers infer from ancient household patterns and from later narrative outcomes.

Question 6

How does v. 21 portray Rahab’s response, and why does the timing matter?

Accepted Answer

Rahab responds with clear agreement: “According to your words, so be it.” Then the narrative immediately shows follow-through—she sends the men away, they depart, and she ties the scarlet line in the window. The timing matters because the invasion has not happened yet; the cord is placed in advance as a standing sign. It also shows she accepts the terms as given, including the house-as-boundary and secrecy, not a negotiated or altered version of the agreement.

Question 7

How do vv. 17–20 balance promise and conditions within the same oath arrangement?

Accepted Answer

The scouts’ promise to spare Rahab’s household is real, but it is not unconditional in the way it is described here. The oath is paired with stated conditions that define when the scouts remain responsible. The conditions address identifiable facts during an attack: which house is hers (scarlet cord), who is supposed to be spared (those gathered inside), and whether the mission is compromised (disclosure). This balance allows the narrative to present the rescue as both a pledged commitment and something that can be voided if the terms are broken.
