Question 1

What details in verse 10 set the scene for Israel’s Passover celebration?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 anchors the event with three concrete details: place, time, and occasion. The place is Israel’s camp at Gilgal, with the Passover kept “in the plains of Jericho,” locating them in the land and near a major city they have not yet attacked. The time is specific: the fourteenth day of the month at evening, matching Passover’s fixed calendar date. The occasion is not explained with commentary; the narrative simply presents it as something Israel does as part of their identity and rhythm, now that they have crossed into Canaan.

Question 2

How does the passage connect Passover to the change in Israel’s food supply?

Accepted Answer

The passage ties the two by tight sequencing. The day after Passover, Israel eats “produce of the land,” specified as unleavened cakes and roasted grain. Then, the next day after they eat that produce, the manna ceases. The text does not claim Israel planned to end manna or that they replaced it by choice; it presents the transition as happening immediately after land food is introduced. In other words, Passover functions as a marker at the threshold: right after the festival, Israel begins to live on Canaan’s food instead of wilderness provision.

Question 3

What is the step-by-step timeline across verses 10–12, and what is repeated for emphasis?

Accepted Answer

The timeline runs across three days (at minimum). Day 1: Passover is kept on the fourteenth day “at evening” (v.10). Day 2: “on the next day after the Passover,” they eat land produce—unleavened cakes and roasted grain—“that same day” (v.11). Day 3: “on the next day, after they had eaten” the land produce, the manna ceases (v.12). Emphasis comes from repeated time phrases (“next day,” “that same day,” “next day”) and from v.12 saying the manna ended both positively (“ceased”) and negatively (“they had… no more”).

Question 4

What foods are named in verse 11, and why might those specific foods matter in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Verse 11 names unleavened cakes and parched (roasted) grain. These are simple, immediate foods: unleavened bread fits the Passover season, and roasted grain can be prepared quickly from available grain without elaborate processing. Narratively, the specificity supports the point that Israel truly begins eating from the land right away, not merely in theory. The text does not explain where the grain came from (fresh harvest or stored supply), but it does underline that this was real food from Canaan, eaten immediately after Passover.

Question 5

What does verse 12 explicitly say about manna, and what does it not say?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 explicitly says manna stopped: it “ceased,” and Israel “had… manna no more.” It also states a new situation: they ate “the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.” What it does not say is equally important: it does not describe Israel sinning, being punished, or losing God’s care. It also does not give a mechanism for how manna ceased; it simply reports the change. The focus is on timing—manna ends right after they begin eating land produce—showing a transition in provision aligned with entry into the land.

Question 6

How do “produce of the land” (v.11) and “fruit of the land of Canaan” (v.12) relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

The passage uses two close phrases. In v.11, “produce of the land” is immediately illustrated by grain-based foods (unleavened cakes and roasted grain). In v.12, “fruit of the land of Canaan” summarizes what replaced manna once the transition happened. The second phrase may be broader than the first—suggesting more than grain alone—though the text does not list other foods here. At minimum, both phrases point to the same main idea: Israel’s diet is now sourced from Canaan rather than from daily wilderness manna.

Question 7

What role does location (“Gilgal” and “plains of Jericho”) play in the meaning of this scene?

Accepted Answer

Location places Israel in a liminal moment: they are inside the land but still camped, and they are near Jericho before any conquest story begins in chapter 6. That setting makes the Passover notable: they keep a major festival while facing an upcoming conflict, reinforcing that Israel’s identity is grounded in remembered deliverance, not just military readiness. The location also makes the food shift plausible: near Jericho’s cultivated area, grain and other supplies could be accessible. The narrative uses these place names to show that covenant life and daily provision continue immediately upon entry.
