Question 1

What reason does Joshua 5:4 give for why Joshua circumcised Israel at this time?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 gives a straightforward cause: the males who came out of Egypt—especially described as “men of war”—had died during the wilderness journey after leaving Egypt. Since those men were no longer alive, the community now consisted largely of their descendants. The circumcision at Gilgal is presented as addressing this demographic reality. The verse frames the issue as a generational shift rather than a new rule: the earlier cohort had the covenant marker, but they were gone, so the current generation needed it.

Question 2

How do verses 5 and 7 describe the difference between the exodus generation and the wilderness-born generation?

Accepted Answer

Verses 5 and 7 contrast two groups. First, the people who came out of Egypt are said to have been circumcised. Second, those born in the wilderness “by the way” were not circumcised during the journey. Verse 7 restates the point: the “children” raised up in place of the dead generation are the ones Joshua circumcises, precisely because they remained uncircumcised. The repetition underscores that the circumcision at Gilgal is corrective—making up for what had not been done while traveling.

Question 3

According to verse 6, what is the stated reason the earlier generation did not enter the land?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 connects the earlier generation’s loss to their failure to “listen to the voice of Yahweh.” The text then states the consequence in oath language: Yahweh swore that he would not let them see the land he had promised to their fathers, described as a land “flowing with milk and honey.” In the passage’s logic, the forty years are not merely travel time; they are the period in which the disobedient fighting-age generation dies off, clearing the way for a replacement generation to enter.

Question 4

What does “men of war” contribute to the explanation, and what group is mainly in view?

Accepted Answer

“Men of war” narrows the focus to those who would have been fighting-age males from the exodus generation. This helps explain the community’s transition: the cohort that would normally lead the conquest is precisely the one that died in the wilderness. It also fits the immediate context, since Israel is about to face conflicts in Canaan. While the passage mentions “all the nation,” it repeatedly spotlights the fighting men as the key demographic group whose disappearance created the need to circumcise those who now stand in their place.

Question 5

What does the phrase “raised up in their place” mean in context (v. 7)?

Accepted Answer

In context, “raised up in their place” points to generational replacement: the children who grew up and became the new community after the exodus generation died. The passage immediately clarifies who these children are—those who were uncircumcised because circumcision was not performed during the journey. The phrase therefore emphasizes continuity of the people as a whole (Israel continues), while acknowledging discontinuity in membership (a new generation now occupies the role once held by the exodus-era fighting men).

Question 6

What parts of the explanation are explicit in the text, and what parts are left unstated?

Accepted Answer

The text is explicit about several points: (1) the exodus-era fighting men died in the wilderness, (2) those who left Egypt had been circumcised, (3) those born during the journey were not circumcised, and (4) the earlier generation’s death is tied to not listening to Yahweh and to Yahweh’s sworn refusal to let them see the land (vv. 4–6). What is left unstated is the practical or historical reason circumcision was not carried out during the wilderness period; the passage reports the fact but does not narrate the decision or circumstances behind it.

Question 7

How does the passage connect covenant identity (circumcision) with the transition into the land?

Accepted Answer

Joshua 5:4–7 places circumcision right at the threshold of land life. The passage does not explicitly explain the theology of circumcision here, but it treats the practice as a necessary marker for the generation that will take possession of the promise. The storyline links three elements: promise (land sworn to the fathers), judgment on the disobedient generation (they would not see it), and preparation of the replacement generation (they are circumcised because they had not been “by the way”). Together, these elements frame entry into Canaan as a covenant-shaped transition.
