Question 1

How do verses 22–23 connect this scene back to the earlier spy episode?

Accepted Answer

The link is made directly by Joshua’s wording and by the people involved. Joshua addresses “the two men who had spied out the land” and grounds his command in what they “swore” to Rahab. The rescue is not presented as a new decision but as the carrying out of a prior promise made in a high-risk moment. The narrative then shows the spies acting on that obligation by going into Rahab’s house and bringing out the people connected to her. This creates continuity: the conquest account includes accountability to an oath made earlier in the story.

Question 2

What details show how extensive Rahab’s rescue was meant to be?

Accepted Answer

The text piles up relational terms to underline breadth. The spies bring out Rahab and then name her father, mother, and brothers, and then add “all that she had,” followed by “all her relatives also.” That progression moves from immediate family to a wider circle. Even if “all that she had” is taken as emphasis rather than additional categories, the repeated wording communicates that the rescue was not narrow or minimal. It is portrayed as a comprehensive extraction of Rahab’s household network, not merely saving Rahab alone.

Question 3

What might be communicated by placing Rahab’s group “outside of the camp of Israel” (v. 23)?

Accepted Answer

At the most basic level, it shows a real change of location and status: they are removed from Jericho but not yet presented as fully integrated within Israel’s camp life. In the wider biblical world, “inside/outside the camp” language can signal boundaries—social, administrative, or ritual—without explaining which one is in view each time. Here the text does not specify duration or reason, but the placement functions as a transition step. It allows the narrative to affirm rescue and protection while still marking a boundary immediately after the battle.

Question 4

How does verse 24 distinguish between what is destroyed and what is preserved?

Accepted Answer

Verse 24 states the general rule with sweeping language: the city is burned, “and all that was therein.” Then it immediately names an exception: silver, gold, and vessels of bronze and iron are not burned. Instead, they are placed into “the treasury of the house of Yahweh.” This creates two categories: what is removed from human use by destruction, and what is removed from private possession by being dedicated to Yahweh’s treasury. The practical outcome is that valuables are not treated as normal plunder for soldiers to keep.

Question 5

What is the narrative effect of crediting Joshua with Rahab’s survival in verse 25?

Accepted Answer

Although the spies physically carry out the rescue in verses 22–23, verse 25 says that Joshua “saved alive” Rahab and her father’s household. That wording frames the rescue as an official act under Joshua’s authority, not merely a private favor by the spies. It also ties the outcome back to the leader responsible for the conquest operation. At the same time, the verse preserves the earlier causal reason: Rahab is spared “because she hid the messengers” Joshua sent, linking human actions and leadership responsibility in one account.

Question 6

What does “she lived in the midst of Israel to this day” contribute to the story’s meaning (v. 25)?

Accepted Answer

The phrase functions like a narrator’s bridge from the past event to the community’s remembered present. It signals that Rahab’s rescue had lasting consequences: she is not only spared in the moment but becomes part of Israel’s ongoing story. “To this day” most naturally reads as the writer’s way of saying, “this continued up to the time of reporting,” though the exact date is not specified. The effect is to present Rahab’s incorporation as an enduring reality known to Israel, not a fleeting wartime exception.

Question 7

How do verses 22–25 hold together judgment on Jericho and mercy toward Rahab without treating them as inconsistent?

Accepted Answer

The passage narrates both outcomes as intentional and rule-governed. Jericho is burned “and all that was therein,” emphasizing comprehensive judgment. Yet the rescue of Rahab is also presented as a defined obligation: Joshua commands it based on a sworn promise, and the text repeats that Rahab is spared because she hid the messengers. In other words, the mercy is not accidental or in competition with the conquest; it is built into the story’s moral logic. The valuables placed in Yahweh’s treasury add a third element: not everything goes to destruction or private gain; some is set apart.
