Question 1

In verses 10–11, what change in posture and focus does God require from Joshua, and why does the text present that shift as necessary?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 shows God interrupting Joshua’s continued posture of lying facedown. The text does not explain Joshua’s grief as wrong in itself, but it portrays remaining there as not addressing the crisis. Verse 11 immediately supplies the reason: God already knows the cause of the defeat and names it directly—“Israel has sinned” and has broken the covenant command by taking devoted items and hiding the truth. The narrative effect is to move from lament to diagnosis and then to a concrete response.

Question 2

What specific actions does God list in verse 11, and what do those verbs suggest about the nature of the offense?

Accepted Answer

God gives a layered description: Israel has transgressed the covenant command, taken from the devoted things, stolen, dissembled (hidden the truth), and put the devoted items among their own possessions. The sequence suggests intentionality and concealment rather than a simple mistake. It also frames the act as more than taking spoil: it includes deception and integrating restricted items into ordinary personal property. The piling up of actions emphasizes seriousness and suggests the problem is both covenant disobedience and hidden corruption within the camp.

Question 3

According to verses 12–13, how does the passage connect the hidden devoted thing to Israel’s military failure?

Accepted Answer

Verses 12–13 state that Israel “can’t stand” before enemies and therefore retreats. The text grounds this outcome in the presence of the devoted thing “in the midst” of Israel. It also says the people have “become accursed,” meaning they are treated as under the same devoted status connected to the prohibited items. The passage repeats the point: they will not be able to stand until the devoted thing is destroyed/removed. The logic is explicit: covenant breach → loss of standing in battle → removal as the necessary remedy.

Question 4

What does “I will not be with you any more” contribute to the passage’s logic, based on the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

In context, the statement functions as a conditional divine stance tied to the battle situation: God’s supportive presence is not portrayed as automatic when the covenant command has been violated and the devoted thing remains hidden among them. The verse immediately qualifies it: God will not be with them “except” they destroy/remove the devoted thing. That conditional framing links God’s presence to covenant faithfulness and to Israel’s ability to face enemies. The text presents the removal as the decisive condition for restored ability to stand.

Question 5

What is the stated “next step” in verse 13, and what does it imply about the kind of response needed?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 gives two immediate instructions: Joshua is to “get up” and to “sanctify the people,” telling them to sanctify themselves “against tomorrow.” The timeline implies a formal, community-wide preparation rather than a private fix. The focus is not on planning better tactics first but on addressing the internal covenant breach because the devoted thing is “in the midst” of Israel. The goal is stated plainly: they cannot stand before enemies until the devoted thing is taken away from among them.

Question 6

How does the passage use collective language (“Israel,” “children of Israel”) while describing wrongdoing that sounds like personal theft and concealment?

Accepted Answer

The text consistently speaks in corporate terms: “Israel has sinned,” “they have taken,” and “the children of Israel can’t stand.” At the same time, the listed actions—stealing, hiding, placing items among “their own stuff”—sound like what individuals do. The passage itself does not resolve the tension; it simply treats the act as the community’s covenant breach with community-wide consequences. This pushes readers to notice how covenant identity works in the narrative: one hidden act is handled as a threat to the whole camp’s standing.

Question 7

What repeated phrases or ideas in verses 12–13 reinforce the main point, and what do they emphasize?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeats the inability to “stand before your enemies” and the necessity of removing the devoted thing “from among you.” It also repeats the command to “get up,” bracketing the diagnosis with urgency. The repetition emphasizes that the obstacle is internal and specific (the devoted thing present “in the midst”) and that the remedy is equally specific (destroy/remove it). The repeated language also tightens the cause-and-effect: defeat is not random; it is tied to covenant breach, and the next step is cleansing before renewed conflict.
