Question 1

What does Joshua ask Achan to do in verse 19, and how are those requests connected?

Accepted Answer

Joshua asks Achan to “give glory” to Yahweh and to “make confession” to him, then immediately adds a direct demand: “tell me now what you have done; don’t hide it from me.” In the flow of the verse, honoring Yahweh is not presented as an abstract feeling but as speaking truthfully about the offense. The confession is addressed to God, yet it is also spoken to Joshua as Israel’s leader. The requests are connected: full disclosure to human authority is treated as part of accountability before Yahweh.

Question 2

How does Achan describe his wrongdoing in verses 20–21, and what sequence does he emphasize?

Accepted Answer

Achan begins with an explicit admission: he has sinned against Yahweh, “the God of Israel.” He then narrates the wrongdoing step-by-step: he saw the items among the spoil, he desired them, he took them, and he hid them. That sequence matters because it presents the act as more than a single impulsive moment; it includes internal desire and a deliberate attempt to conceal. By giving the chain of events, Achan provides a self-incriminating account that can be checked against physical evidence.

Question 3

What items does Achan list, and what details make his confession testable?

Accepted Answer

Achan lists three categories of valuables: a “Babylonian” garment (a prestigious piece of clothing), two hundred shekels of silver, and a gold piece weighing fifty shekels. He also specifies where they are hidden: buried in the earth inside his tent, with the silver placed underneath the other goods. Those details—types of items, weights, and exact location—make the confession testable. The story is set up so that later actions can either confirm or disprove what Achan has said.

Question 4

What does verse 22 contribute to the story’s logic after Achan confesses?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 supplies verification. Joshua does not stop at hearing an admission; he sends messengers to search the tent. The narrative highlights speed (“they ran”) and confirmation (“behold”), underscoring that the confession corresponds to reality. The messengers find the items hidden in the tent, including the detail that the silver is underneath. This turns Achan’s words into established facts in the story: the wrongdoing is no longer merely alleged or privately admitted but publicly confirmed by discovered evidence.

Question 5

In verse 23, who sees the recovered items, and what does it mean that they are laid down “before Yahweh”?

Accepted Answer

The recovered items are brought to Joshua and to “all the children of Israel,” meaning the wider assembly is made aware of the evidence. The goods are then laid down “before Yahweh,” which signals that this is handled as a matter under God’s authority, not just a theft case within the camp. The phrase can suggest proximity to a sacred space, but at minimum it frames the presentation as formal and accountable to God as witness. The community sees the items as implicated in a breach against Yahweh.

Question 6

How does the passage move between private concealment and public exposure, and why is that movement important in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

The passage begins with something hidden: items buried under the ground inside a tent, a private household space. Joshua’s interrogation forces the hidden act into speech, and the search forces the hidden goods into view. By verse 23, the evidence has moved from under the earth to the center of the community’s attention and then into a setting described as “before Yahweh.” This movement is important because the story is explaining why a community-wide crisis (Israel’s defeat and trouble) is tied to a private act; the narrative shows the hidden cause being uncovered and publicly established.
