Question 1

What specific actions does Joshua perform in verses 30–32, and how are they tied to Moses?

Accepted Answer

Verses 30–32 describe Joshua building an altar to Yahweh on Mount Ebal, making it from uncut stones without using iron tools, offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, and then writing “a copy of the law of Moses” on stones. The narrative repeatedly connects these actions to Moses: it says Joshua acts “as Moses… commanded” and “as it is written in the book of the law of Moses.” The point in the wording is not just that Joshua worships, but that he does it in continuity with Moses’ recorded instruction.

Question 2

What does the text emphasize about the altar’s construction, and what meaning does that emphasis likely carry within the passage?

Accepted Answer

The altar is described as made from uncut stones, and the text stresses that no iron tool was lifted on them. Within the passage, that detail functions as an obedience marker: Joshua follows a prescribed pattern rather than inventing his own. It also distinguishes the altar from something meant to showcase human skill or power. The focus remains on Yahweh as the recipient of the offerings and on Israel’s compliance with the covenant direction associated with Moses.

Question 3

What does “he wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses… in the presence of the children of Israel” contribute to the scene?

Accepted Answer

The writing is described as public: it happens “in the presence” of the Israelites. That makes the law visibly established among the people as they take steps into the land. The text does not treat the law as hidden or restricted to leaders; it is witnessed by the community. The phrase “a copy of the law of Moses” also links Joshua’s actions to the earlier covenant tradition, showing that entry and settlement are paired with publicly affirming the covenant’s terms.

Question 4

How is the assembly arranged in verse 33, and what groups are explicitly included?

Accepted Answer

Verse 33 places “all Israel”—including elders, officers, and judges—on both sides of the ark, facing the priests/Levites who carry it. The people are split so that half stand in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal. The text explicitly includes “the sojourner” and “the native,” showing that the gathered community is not limited to ethnic Israelites alone but includes resident outsiders living among them. The ark’s central position highlights Yahweh’s covenant presence as the center of the assembly.

Question 5

How do verses 34–35 describe the reading of the law, and what does the repetition add?

Accepted Answer

The reading is described as comprehensive: Joshua reads “all the words of the law,” specifically including “the blessing and the curse,” and he does so “according to all that is written” in the book of the law. Verse 35 restates the idea even more strongly: “not a word” of what Moses commanded was left unread. The repetition functions like an underline—this was not a selective ceremony focused only on agreeable parts; the covenant message in full (promise and warning) was publicly proclaimed to the whole community.

Question 6

Who hears the reading in verse 35, and what does that imply about the covenant ceremony’s public character?

Accepted Answer

Verse 35 explicitly names “all the assembly of Israel,” and then highlights groups that could be overlooked: “the women,” “the little ones,” and “the sojourners who were among them.” This stresses that the covenant ceremony is not merely for adult males, soldiers, or officials. It is framed as a community-wide event in which every part of the population is present as the law is read aloud. The text’s emphasis on the full audience reinforces the law’s role as a shared public standard for life in the land.

Question 7

How does this passage function in the larger story flow, coming after conflict and victory narratives?

Accepted Answer

Within Joshua’s narrative sequence, this ceremony pauses the military storyline to re-center Israel’s identity on covenant obedience. The passage foregrounds Moses’ commands and the written law, showing that conquest is not the only—or even the main—theme. Instead, worship, written instruction, and public hearing define what Israel is doing in the land. By positioning the ark, priests, law writing, and law reading at the center, the text frames Israel’s future as dependent on covenant faithfulness, not simply on battlefield momentum.
