The three cases also widen the scope: from Israel’s wilderness generation (human community), to rebellious angels (heavenly beings), to Sodom and nearby cities (a public, well-known disaster). In each, Jude emphasizes both the seriousness and the certainty of judgment.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

1) Who “the Lord” is in v. 5. Some read “the Lord” as a general reference to God. Others think Jude is referring more specifically to the Lord Jesus, meaning Jude links Jesus directly with Israel’s exodus rescue and later judgment. The verse itself clearly says “the Lord” saved and later destroyed; the question is how specific that title is.

2) Which angel story is assumed in v. 6. Jude clearly describes angels who abandoned their assigned sphere and are now kept in darkness for future judgment. Readers differ on which known story stands behind this: some connect it mainly to Genesis 6 traditions about angelic sin; others connect it more generally to stories of angelic rebellion. Jude does not retell the whole background, so the identification is partly inferred.

3) What “strange flesh” means in v. 7. Jude explicitly ties Sodom and its neighboring cities to “sexual immorality” and “strange flesh.” Some understand “strange flesh” as same-sex sexual activity. Others understand it as pursuing non-human partners (in line with the angel theme in v. 6) or as a broader category of illicit sexual desire. The text is clear that Jude treats the behavior as seriously wrong; the debate is about the most precise referent.

4) What “eternal fire” means in v. 7. Jude presents Sodom as “set forth as an example,” “suffering the punishment of eternal fire.” Some take this as language about ongoing punishment. Others take it as language about a decisive, God-sent destruction with lasting results and warning value, even if the physical fire is not still burning.

Why the disagreement exists

Jude uses brief, allusive references meant to trigger shared memory rather than provide full explanations. Because he assumes background knowledge (Israel’s wilderness story, traditions about rebellious angels, Sodom’s destruction), later readers reconstruct details from other biblical texts and from wider Jewish story-material. Also, several phrases (“the Lord,” “strange flesh,” “eternal fire”) are true statements in context but still broad enough to allow more than one precise mapping.

What this passage clearly contributes

• God’s past acts of rescue do not cancel later accountability; Jude states that the Lord saved from Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe.
• Jude places angelic rebellion under God’s restraint now and under future judgment later: the angels are “kept” (held) in darkness “for the judgment of the great day” (kept).
• Sodom, Gomorrah, and nearby cities function as a public warning: Jude says they are “set forth as an example” and connects their judgment to sexual wrongdoing and “strange flesh.”
• Across the three examples, Jude’s main theological move is consistent: rebellion against one’s proper allegiance and boundaries leads to real judgment, even when the starting point included privilege or proximity to God’s work.
