Question 1

How does the passage heighten the emotional impact of the homecoming in vv. 34–35?

Accepted Answer

The narrator builds celebration first: Jephthah comes home after victory, and the greeting is musical and public (tambourines and dancing). Then the text adds a crucial detail: the greeter is his only child, and he has no other son or daughter. That line makes the cost feel total, not partial. Jephthah’s response (tearing clothes) signals intense grief, and his words frame the moment as irreversible because of his vow to Yahweh. The joy of return turns instantly into crisis.

Question 2

What does Jephthah say about his vow, and how does that shape the narrative tension?

Accepted Answer

Jephthah says he has “opened [his] mouth to Yahweh” and cannot go back (v. 35). The story treats his spoken words as binding, at least in his own mind and in the way the plot proceeds. That claim sets up the tension: the reader is not shown options being weighed; instead, the vow is presented as a trap that closes when the first person to greet him is his daughter. The crisis is not merely emotional but anchored to what Jephthah believes his vow requires.

Question 3

How does Jephthah’s daughter interpret the situation in v. 36, and what reasons does she give?

Accepted Answer

She accepts her father’s premise that his vow must be carried out: “do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth.” She also connects the vow to the battle outcome, saying Yahweh has taken vengeance on Jephthah’s enemies (the Ammonites). In other words, she reads the victory as the backdrop that gives the vow its claimed obligation. The verse does not say she agrees the vow was wise; it shows she yields to its stated terms and to her father’s sense of duty to Yahweh.

Question 4

Why might vv. 37–39 emphasize mourning her virginity rather than mourning her life?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeats virginity language multiple times: she asks to mourn it, she and her friends mourn it, and after the vow is carried out the narrator again notes she was a virgin. At minimum, this highlights the end of her prospects for marriage and children, which also means the end of Jephthah’s line (since she is his only child). That emphasis can be read as pointing to the particular tragedy of losing future family continuity. It also supplies key evidence for readers who think the vow’s outcome involved permanent celibacy rather than death.

Question 5

What role do the daughter’s companions and the two-month period play in the story?

Accepted Answer

The companions and the set time slow the narrative down and shift attention from Jephthah’s vow to the daughter’s experience. The two months create a formal interval between the crisis and its fulfillment, letting the reader sit with the impending cost. The presence of companions frames her mourning as communal rather than private, which fits the ending where Israelite women later commemorate her yearly. The mountains setting underscores withdrawal from ordinary life during this period and marks the event as a significant passage into a new, irreversible status.

Question 6

What does v. 40 add by describing a yearly four-day observance among Israel’s daughters?

Accepted Answer

Verse 40 shows the event did not stay a family matter; it became a remembered public story, especially among women. The annual four-day practice functions like a community memorial that preserves the meaning of what happened to Jephthah’s daughter. The text’s wording (“celebrate” or “commemorate,” depending on translation) can carry different tones, but the basic point is clear: her fate became a reference point in Israel’s social memory. The focus falls on the daughter—her life, loss, and significance—rather than on Jephthah’s military success.
