Homecoming turns celebration into crisis Jephthah arrives at Mizpah, and his daughter comes out first with tambourines and dancing to welcome him. The narrator stresses she is his only child. Seeing her, Jephthah tears his clothes in grief and tells her she has brought him very low, because he has spoken a vow to Yahweh and says he cannot take it back.
The daughter accepts the vow’s claim She answers that since he has spoken to Yahweh, he should do to her what he promised. She connects this to the recent military outcome, saying Yahweh has acted against Jephthah’s enemies, the Ammonites, so the vow now stands in the wake of victory.
A request for time to mourn virginity She asks for one concession: two months of freedom to go with companions into the mountains and mourn her virginity. Jephthah agrees and sends her away for that period, and the text repeats that she and her companions mourned her virginity in the mountains.
Literary Context

The story closes not with celebration of Jephthah, but with an annual four-day practice that keeps the daughter’s fate publicly remembered.
The main question is what Jephthah actually did in v. 39 (“did with her according to his vow”). Some read the vow as a literal human sacrifice, meaning she was killed as an offering. Others read the vow as lifelong dedication to Yahweh in a way that required permanent virginity and separation from ordinary family life, meaning she lived but never married or had children.
A smaller question is the tone of v. 40 (“celebrate”): some take it as lament-like remembrance (honoring her through mourning), while others take it as a more general commemoration that could include praise for her devotion even while grieving the outcome.
The passage does not restate the content of the vow here; it only refers back to it. In these verses the narrator focuses on the daughter’s response and the emphasis on virginity, not on describing the act itself. The repeated note that “she was a virgin” can be read two ways: either as a detail that makes her death especially tragic (no descendants), or as the key clue that the vow’s result was permanent virginity rather than death. Likewise, the annual four-day observance in v. 40 fits either a memorial for someone who died or a tradition honoring a life uniquely set apart.
