Question 1

What sequence of actions does the text describe from v. 4 to v. 6?

Accepted Answer

The text moves in three steps. First, Jephthah gathers Gilead’s fighting men and engages Ephraim in open conflict, with Gilead striking Ephraim (v. 4). Second, after the battle, Gilead takes control of the Jordan fords, a chokepoint that prevents Ephraimites from escaping back across the river (v. 5). Third, at that checkpoint Gilead interrogates suspected fugitives: an initial identity question (“Are you an Ephraimite?”) is followed by a speech test. Failure leads to seizure and execution (v. 6).

Question 2

According to v. 4, what does Ephraim say about Gilead, and how does the narrator connect that to the fighting?

Accepted Answer

Ephraim’s statement labels the Gileadites as “fugitives” associated with Ephraim and Manasseh—language that treats Gilead as dependent, illegitimate, or out of place. The narrator connects Gilead’s striking of Ephraim “because” of what Ephraim said (v. 4). That does not necessarily mean the insult was the only cause, but the text highlights it as a triggering grievance that escalates a dispute into violence. The narrative emphasizes humiliation and contested status as fuel for inter-tribal war.

Question 3

Why are the fords of the Jordan strategically important in vv. 5–6?

Accepted Answer

The fords function as a narrow crossing where movement can be controlled. After Ephraim is beaten, fugitives try to “go over,” implying they are attempting to escape the conflict zone and return to safer territory (v. 5). By taking the fords “against the Ephraimites,” Gilead positions guards where escape routes concentrate. This turns a battlefield victory into a pursuit and capture operation. The text’s logic is simple: control the crossing, then screen and stop those trying to pass (vv. 5–6).

Question 4

How does the identification process work at the fords, and what does it show about the conflict?

Accepted Answer

The process is layered. First, a guard asks directly whether the person is an Ephraimite (v. 5). If the person denies it, the guard requires a second test: saying “Shibboleth” (v. 6). The suspect’s pronunciation (“Sibboleth”) reveals he cannot produce the expected sound, and that becomes enough for the guards to treat him as Ephraimite, seize him, and kill him (v. 6). The conflict is not only military but also about sorting insiders and outsiders under pressure, using speech as evidence.

Question 5

What does the word “fugitives” refer to in this passage, and where is the ambiguity?

Accepted Answer

In v. 5, “fugitives of Ephraim” clearly refers to Ephraimite survivors fleeing after defeat. In v. 4, “fugitives” appears as an insult directed at Gilead: “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites….” The ambiguity is what Ephraim means by it. It may be social contempt (calling them runaways or inferior people living among stronger tribes), or it may hint at a deeper dispute about tribal origin or territory (“you don’t really belong as your own group”). The text highlights the slur’s impact without clarifying its background.

Question 6

What is the narrative effect of ending with the number ‘forty-two thousand’ in v. 6?

Accepted Answer

The closing number functions as a summary of the episode’s severity. By reporting that 42,000 from Ephraim fell “at that time,” the narrator underscores that the conflict’s outcome was catastrophic, not a minor skirmish (v. 6). Whether a reader treats the number as an exact count or as a conventional battle total, the story’s point is that the losses were massive and final. Placing the number after the description of executions at the fords connects the toll not only to the battle but to the post-battle screening and killings.

Question 7

What role does speech (pronunciation) play in vv. 5–6, and what does the text explicitly say about why it worked?

Accepted Answer

Speech becomes a practical identity marker. The guards choose a word (“Shibboleth”) and require suspects to say it (v. 6). The text explicitly explains the failure: the suspect says “Sibboleth” because “he couldn’t manage to pronounce it right.” That explanation points to a sound difference the person is unable to produce, which the guards treat as diagnostic of Ephraimite identity. The passage does not claim the test is morally right; it simply presents it as effective for distinguishing groups during the crisis (vv. 5–6).
