Manoah offers, and something astonishing happens Manoah takes the young goat and the grain offering and places them on a rock “to Yahweh.” While Manoah and his wife watch, the messenger performs something described as wondrous—an action beyond normal expectation—so the couple becomes eyewitnesses to the event rather than just hearers of words.
The rising flame becomes the revealing sign As the flame rises upward from the altar, the messenger of Yahweh rises in the flame itself. The couple is again explicitly said to be watching, and their immediate response is physical: they fall face-down to the ground, a posture of awe, fear, and submission.
No further appearances, and Manoah’s recognition After this, the messenger no longer appears to Manoah or his wife. The narrative presents Manoah’s conclusion as a settled recognition: only then does he “know” the visitor was the messenger of Yahweh, linking his understanding to what he witnessed at the offering.
Literary Context
This scene follows Manoah and his wife repeatedly meeting a mysterious visitor who announces the birth of a special son and gives instructions about the mother’s and child’s restrictions. Manoah presses for the visitor’s name and tries to show hospitality by preparing a meal, but the visitor redirects the focus toward giving an offering to Yahweh instead. The narrative then moves from conversation to a public sign: something visible happens at the offering that confirms the visitor is not an ordinary man. The next lines (vv. 22–23) will show the couple processing fear and reassurance after this realization.
Historical Context
Judges portrays a time before Israel had a centralized monarchy, when clans and tribes lived under pressure from surrounding groups and local power centers. Offerings of animals and grain were common ways to honor a deity and seek help, and worship could be carried out at simple local sites such as a prominent rock used as an altar. People expected divine messengers to be rare and unsettling, and visible signs tied to fire were widely understood in the ancient Near East as a way to mark divine attention. The Philistines are the immediate background power in this chapter’s wider story setting.

Who “did wondrously.” The text says “the angel did wondrously” (or can be read in a way that makes Yahweh the one acting wondrously). Either way, the result is the same in the story: the event is a divine sign connected to Yahweh and his messenger.
Rock or altar. Verse 19 says the offering is placed “on the rock,” but verse 20 refers to “the altar.” Some readers take this to mean the rock functioned as an altar at that moment; others think an altar was present and the rock language simply describes the setting or surface.
How literal the ascent is. Many read the messenger’s ascent “in the flame” as a straightforward miracle observed by the couple. Others think the language is intentionally heightened to describe a visionary-like sign without trying to spell out mechanics, while still treating it as a real divine revelation in the narrative.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew phrasing can attach “wondrously” to different subjects, and the scene uses compact storytelling that moves between “rock” and “altar” without explanation. Also, “in the flame” is vivid but brief, leaving readers to decide whether to picture a physically visible ascent or a narratively compressed description of a miraculous departure.
