2. How to evaluate Micah’s “now I know.” Some read it as naïve confidence—sincere but misguided. Others hear a sharper note of presumption: he speaks as if he can secure Yahweh’s favor by getting the “right” religious credential.

Why the disagreement exists

The line is short and does not define its key terms. “Good” is open-ended, and “now I know” can describe either firm confidence or overconfidence. Also, the verse sits at the end of a story about a private shrine and a hired priest, so readers weigh how much the author expects the audience to critique Micah’s setup versus simply recognize common assumptions of that time.

What this passage clearly contributes

This verse shows a pattern of thinking: Micah links Yahweh’s future blessing to a religious arrangement he has put in place. The text presents a cause-and-effect logic in Micah’s mind: having a Levite priest in his household functions, for him, as a guarantee of divine “good.” In the flow of Judges, it also sets up tension: Micah’s confident claim becomes something the next narrative can test.
