Verse by Verse
Flight, pursuit, and encirclement Benjamin turns and runs toward the wilderness, away from Israel’s forces (Judges 20:42). The fight does not pause; Israel “follows hard,” and fighters coming out from the cities join in destroying Benjamin “in the midst” of their retreat. The next verse intensifies the picture: Benjamin is ringed around, chased, and pressed down from their stopping point, with the movement traced as far as the area east of Gibeah at sunrise (Judges 20:43).
Casualty totals and who is falling The narrator reports a first total: 18,000 Benjaminite men fall, described as “men of valor” (Judges 20:44). Then a second phase of the pursuit is described: fleeing toward the rock of Rimmon, 5,000 are cut down on the highways, and the chase continues to Gidom where 2,000 more are struck down (Judges 20:45). The summary total for the day is then given as 25,000 sword-bearing men, again called “men of valor” ().
Literary Context
This section is the closing movement of the war narrative in Judges 19–21, where an outrage at Gibeah triggers a tribal assembly and a punitive campaign against Benjamin. Earlier in the chapter, Israel suffers heavy losses, then uses a feigned retreat and an ambush to break Benjamin’s formation and set Gibeah on fire, shifting the battle’s momentum. These verses finish that reversal: the retreat turns into a chase, the chase becomes a near-total collapse, and the story widens from soldiers to whole towns. The episode also sets up the aftermath problem in Judges 21: Israel has almost erased a tribe.
Historical Context
The setting fits a pre-monarchy Israel organized as a loose tribal coalition rather than a centralized state, with ad hoc mustering for major conflicts. Warfare described here reflects close-quarter fighting, pursuit after a line breaks, and the vulnerability of settlements when defenders are defeated. Place names like Gibeah and the rock of Rimmon point to the central hill country, with “wilderness” indicating rougher, less settled terrain used for escape and hiding. The burning of towns and killing of livestock match ancient total-war practices used to cripple a group’s ability to recover after defeat.

A surviving pocket Despite the large-scale slaughter, 600 men escape to the wilderness refuge at the rock of Rimmon and remain there for four months (Judges 20:47). The verse functions as a hinge: Benjamin is not utterly gone, yet survival is reduced to a small, isolated remnant.
Retaliation against towns After the rout, Israel turns back onto Benjamin’s population centers and carries out broad destruction: people in the cities, cattle, and everything encountered are struck “with the edge of the sword,” and the cities found are set on fire (Judges 20:48). The focus shifts from battlefield defeat to dismantling Benjamin’s remaining societal base.
Judges 20:42–48 closes the battle by describing a full collapse of Benjamin’s fighting force. The text is explicit about the direction of flight (toward the wilderness), the relentless pursuit, and the step-by-step cutting down of Benjaminite warriors (vv. 42–46). It is also explicit that a small group survives (600 men) by reaching the rock of Rimmon and staying there for four months (v. 47). Finally, it reports Israel turning from the battlefield to Benjaminite towns, killing broadly (including livestock) and burning what they encounter (v. 48).
This passage also reinforces a major feature of Judges’ world: without a central king or stable justice system, tribal conflict can escalate into extreme violence, moving from punishing fighters to devastating settlements.
How the casualty numbers fit together. Some readers take the 18,000 (v. 44) as a first wave within a larger day-total of 25,000 (v. 46). Others think the numbers reflect overlapping reports or a compressed summary where the math is not meant to be audited.
Who “came out of the cities” are (v. 42). Many read this as additional Israelite forces joining the pursuit from nearby towns. Others suggest it could mean people from local settlements participating in the attack in some way; the text itself does not clearly identify them beyond the phrase.
How broad “all the cities which they found” is (v. 48). Some read it as hyperbolic battle language meaning “the towns they came upon” in their sweep. Others take it as intending near-total destruction across Benjamin’s territory.
The passage narrates fast-moving violence in a compact way: it stacks pursuit scenes, uses summary totals, and uses broad phrases (“all,” “in the midst,” “all that they found”) that can be read either as comprehensive or as typical war-report emphasis. It also does not pause to clarify identities (“those who came out of the cities”) or to explain how the sub-totals relate to the final total.
Textually, it depicts a rout that becomes annihilation: Benjamin’s “men of valor” are cut down in multiple stages (vv. 44–46), leaving only a small remnant (v. 47). It also makes clear that the conflict expands beyond combatants to the destruction of towns and resources (v. 48). As part of the wider story in Judges 19–21, these verses set up the later crisis: Israel has nearly erased one of its own tribes, and the narrative must now reckon with that outcome (Judges 21).
