The oppression is pictured less as Midian administering a stable government and more as repeated, seasonal raids. After Israel sows, Midian arrives with Amalekites and “people of the east,” camps in the land, and strips it of crops and animals. The end result is national collapse (“brought very low”) and a turning point: Israel cries out to Yahweh.

Where interpretation differs

Two main questions come up.

First, what does it mean that Yahweh “delivered” Israel into Midian’s hand? Some readers take this as direct divine action behind Midian’s success (Yahweh actively hands Israel over). Others read it as the narrator’s way of interpreting history: Midian truly attacks, and the text frames their success as occurring under Yahweh’s sovereign judgment.

Second, how should details like “until you come to Gaza” and “destroyed the increase of the earth” be taken? Some read them as fairly literal markers of wide geographic devastation and agricultural ruin; others take them as emphatic language that conveys scale and thoroughness without requiring precise borders or a single method of destruction (burning vs. looting vs. both).

Why the disagreement exists The passage uses stock expressions (“hand prevailed,” “delivered into the hand”) that can be read either as a claim about direct causation or as narrative-theological interpretation. It also uses vivid, sweeping descriptions (“like locusts,” “without number,” “until Gaza”) that function clearly as emphasis, but leave room for debate about how exact the geography and mechanics are.

What this passage clearly contributes This paragraph explains why deliverance is needed in the Gideon story: Israel’s crisis is communal, prolonged (seven years), and economic as well as military. It portrays oppression as the removal of food security—produce and essential animals—leading to hiding in mountain shelters and collapse of normal life. It also establishes the narrative pivot: distress leads Israel to cry to Yahweh, setting up what follows Judges 6:6.
