Question 1

What sequence of events does the passage present from verse 1 to verse 6?

Accepted Answer

The text moves in a clear progression. (1) Israel is said to do what is evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh “delivers” them into Midian’s hand for seven years. (2) Midian’s “hand” is strong enough that Israelites change how they live, making mountain dens, caves, and strongholds. (3) A repeated pattern is described: when Israel sows, raiders come up against them. (4) Those raiders camp in the land and devastate the harvest and supplies across a wide area, leaving no sustenance and taking key livestock. (5) Their numbers and mobility are emphasized. (6) Israel is brought very low and cries out to Yahweh.

Question 2

According to verses 2–5, what does Midian’s oppression look like in daily life rather than politics or law?

Accepted Answer

Midian’s dominance is described in practical, survival terms. Israelites respond by hiding in mountain dens and caves and using strongholds, implying fear and inability to defend normal villages and fields. The raiding is timed to Israel’s agriculture: after sowing, the invaders arrive, camp on the land, and ruin the produce. The outcome is not simply tribute or control but near-total deprivation: “no sustenance” is left, and even core animals for food, farming, and transport (sheep, ox, donkey) are removed. The picture is economic strangulation and displacement, not merely a change in who is “in charge.”

Question 3

What repeating pattern is stated in verse 3, and why is that detail important to the passage’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 describes recurrence: “when Israel had sown,” Midian and allies “came up” against them. That timing suggests the oppression is systematic and predictable, tied to the agricultural cycle. The point is not a one-time invasion but an ongoing strategy that prevents recovery. If the raids hit after sowing and at harvest, Israel bears the work and risk of farming but loses the benefits, which explains why the land ends up with “no sustenance.” This also helps explain the intensity of verse 6 (“brought very low”): the damage compounds over years, not days.

Question 4

How do the passage’s images and comparisons (hand, dens/caves, locusts) shape the reader’s understanding of the crisis?

Accepted Answer

The images build a sense of overwhelming power and vulnerability. “The hand of Midian prevailed” portrays control as something felt and inescapable, not abstract. The mention of dens, caves, and strongholds depicts civilians driven into hiding, a life of improvisation rather than stability. The comparison to locusts highlights scale and total consumption: even if not a mathematical count, it conveys that the raiders seem innumerable and leave little behind. Together, these images interpret the crisis as more than military pressure; it is a collapse of security, home life, and food supply.

Question 5

What groups participate in the raids, and what might the text be emphasizing by listing them?

Accepted Answer

The raiders are named as Midianites, Amalekites, and “the children/people of the east.” At minimum, the list shows Midian is not acting alone; Israel faces a coalition or at least multiple participating groups. This increases the sense of threat and helps explain why Israel cannot resist effectively during this period of loose tribal organization. The phrase “people of the east” is somewhat general, but within the passage it functions to widen the picture: the oppression comes from mobile desert-edge peoples who can travel with tents and herds and strike repeatedly. The emphasis is combined force and mobility.

Question 6

What does verse 6 contribute as a concluding statement, and how does it set up what follows in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 summarizes the effect of the prior description: Israel is “brought very low” because of Midian. That phrase gathers up the years of raids, hiding, and loss of food and livestock into a single national condition—collapse and desperation. The second half marks a turning point: Israel “cried to Yahweh.” In Judges, that cry typically signals that the narrative is about to shift from describing oppression to addressing it. Importantly, the passage does not yet describe the content of the cry or immediate deliverance; it ends by establishing the need and the appeal that sets the next scene.

Question 7

What does the text explicitly claim about Yahweh’s role in the situation, and what does it not explicitly explain?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, verse 1 states two linked claims: Israel did evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh “delivered them into the hand of Midian” for seven years. That is the passage’s direct statement about Yahweh’s involvement. What it does not explicitly explain here is how that “delivering” works in terms of mechanism—whether it is described as active intervention, withdrawal of protection, or simply the narrator’s theological reading of historical events. The text also does not describe any immediate response from Yahweh to Israel’s cry within verses 1–6; that comes later.
