Question 1

What details in verse 11 show Gideon’s situation is shaped by fear and scarcity?

Accepted Answer

Verse 11 places Gideon in a winepress beating out wheat, which is not the normal location for threshing grain. The text itself explains the reason: he is doing it “to hide it from the Midianites.” That small note implies repeated raids and a food supply under threat. The messenger’s arrival “under the oak… in Ophrah” on land tied to Joash also sets a local, clan-based setting rather than a national center. Together these details portray a society under pressure where basic survival work is done in secret.

Question 2

How does the greeting in verse 12 create tension with the scene in verse 11?

Accepted Answer

The messenger addresses Gideon with two claims: “Yahweh is with you” and “you mighty man of valor.” But verse 11 has just shown Gideon hiding his grain work from raiders. The tension is not that Gideon is doing something wrong; it is that the language of boldness and divine favor sounds out of place in a moment of concealment and vulnerability. The narrative sets up a contrast between how Gideon looks in the present and how Yahweh names him and his future role.

Question 3

In verse 13, what exactly is Gideon questioning, and what evidence does he use?

Accepted Answer

Gideon questions the meaning of “Yahweh is with us” by pointing to suffering: “why then is all this befallen us?” He uses two kinds of evidence. First is lived experience—current oppression. Second is communal memory—“wondrous works” told by “our fathers,” especially the deliverance “from Egypt.” Gideon’s logic is comparative: if Yahweh is truly present in the way the ancestors described, then Israel’s situation should resemble those rescue stories, not being “delivered… into the hand of Midian.”

Question 4

How does verse 14 respond to Gideon’s request for explanation?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 does not directly explain why suffering happened; it pivots to commissioning. The text says “Yahweh looked at him” and then issues a command: “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian.” The grounding is not an argument about the past but an authorization in the present: “Have not I sent you?” So the response re-frames the problem from “Why is this happening?” to “You are being sent to address it.” The emphasis falls on divine sending rather than Gideon’s analysis.

Question 5

What is the substance of Gideon’s objection in verse 15, and what kind of limitation is he naming?

Accepted Answer

Gideon’s objection is about social standing and resources. He identifies his “family” (clan) as the poorest in Manasseh and himself as the least in his father’s house. That suggests he does not see himself as having the influence, manpower, or credibility normally expected for a deliverer. He is not disputing that Midian is a problem; he is disputing the plausibility of him as the chosen agent. The limitation named is not mainly moral failure but perceived weakness and insignificance.

Question 6

How does verse 16 answer Gideon’s concern, and what kind of assurance is given?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 answers with a promise of presence—“Surely I will be with you”—which directly addresses the earlier tension about whether Yahweh is “with” his people and Gideon (vv. 12–13). The assurance is also outcome-focused: “you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” The verse does not primarily elevate Gideon’s status or deny his smallness; it provides a basis for success outside Gideon’s social rank. The promise ties the mission’s feasibility to Yahweh’s accompanying presence and a decisive result.

Question 7

Across verses 12–16, how does the repeated language of ‘with’ function in the dialogue?

Accepted Answer

The word “with” links the whole exchange: the messenger says “Yahweh is with you” (v. 12), Gideon questions “if Yahweh is with us” (v. 13), and Yahweh answers “I will be with you” (v. 16). In the text, the claim of presence is not treated as a vague comfort; it is contested by circumstances and then reasserted as the foundation for a commission and a promised outcome. The repetition turns “with” into the core issue under debate and the core reassurance that resolves Gideon’s objection.
