Verse by Verse
The nighttime command and its concrete steps Yahweh speaks to Gideon “the same night” and gives a detailed plan. Gideon must take his father’s bull—specified as “the second bull seven years old”—and use it to tear down his father’s Baal altar and cut down the Asherah beside it. He must then build an altar to Yahweh on top of the stronghold “in the orderly manner,” and offer the second bull as a burnt offering, using the wood from the cut-down Asherah.
Gideon obeys, but chooses secrecy for safety Gideon takes ten of his servants and does what he was told. The narrator explains his timing: he is afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, so he does not do it in the daytime. Instead, he carries out the demolition and offering at night.
Discovery, investigation, and a death demand In the morning, the city’s men see the results: Baal’s altar is broken, the Asherah is cut down, and a new altar has been built with the second bull offered on it. They question one another, investigate, and conclude Gideon son of Joash did it. They then go to Joash and demand Gideon be brought out to die, giving two stated reasons: he broke down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah.
Literary Context
This episode follows Gideon’s call and commissioning in Judges 6, where Yahweh addresses Israel’s trouble under Midian and sends Gideon as an agent of change. The narrative narrows from national oppression to a local test inside Gideon’s household and town, showing that the conflict is not only external but also embedded in community worship and loyalty. The scene sets up public recognition of Gideon—first as a controversial figure, then as one given a new name—before the larger military mobilization later in the Gideon cycle (Judges 6–8).
Historical Context
The setting reflects a village-based society in the central highlands, organized around households, elders, and local consensus rather than a centralized monarchy. Worship sites could be tied to family property, with an altar and associated cult object located near a strongpoint or prominent place. Town solidarity could enforce severe penalties against actions seen as threatening communal stability or provoking retaliation from a deity. Bulls functioned as valuable livestock and as standard offerings, and cutting down sacred wood would be a public affront. Nighttime action fits a context where retaliation could be immediate.
Theological Significance
This scene presents a direct conflict of worship loyalties inside Gideon’s own household and town. The text explicitly portrays Baal’s altar and the Asherah as established local religious fixtures tied to Gideon’s father (vv. 25–26), while Yahweh asserts a competing claim by commanding their removal and the building of a new altar for a burnt offering (vv. 25–26).

Joash’s public rebuttal and Gideon’s new name Joash answers the crowd with a challenge: why are they taking up Baal’s case, and why are they trying to “save” him? He proposes a test of Baal’s power: if Baal is truly a god, Baal can contend for himself because his altar was destroyed. Joash even declares that whoever insists on contending for Baal should be put to death “while it is yet morning.” As a result, Gideon receives the name Jerubbaal that day, explained as meaning that Baal should contend with him, since Gideon broke down Baal’s altar.
It also shows that obedience to Yahweh can trigger immediate social danger. Gideon follows the instruction but chooses nighttime action because he is afraid of his family and the townsmen (v. 27). The townsmen treat the demolition as a capital offense (v. 30), indicating that religious acts were not “private” but bound up with community order.
Finally, Joash’s public reply reframes the dispute: if Baal is truly a god, Baal should defend his own honor (v. 31). Gideon’s new name “Jerubbaal” (“Let Baal contend”) makes that argument memorable (v. 32).
What the ‘second bull, seven years old’ means. Some read the detail as symbolically tied to the length of Midian’s oppression in the wider chapter, so the animal itself becomes a narrative sign of the time period. Others take it more straightforwardly: a specific, valuable animal is required, and the age detail underlines cost and seriousness without needing extra symbolism.
What Joash’s death statement is doing in the story. Some read Joash’s line (“whoever contends for Baal… put to death while it is yet morning,” v. 31) as a serious legal threat meant to stop the mob by turning their zeal back on them. Others read it as sharp rhetoric meant to expose the absurdity of “saving” Baal, not as a policy Joash plans to enforce.
The passage gives vivid actions but limited explanation. It reports unusual specificity (“second bull… seven years old”) without stating why it matters. It also records Joash’s words without narrating whether anyone tries to carry out his proposed counter-death-penalty, leaving readers to decide how literal or rhetorical his statement is.
The text clearly contributes a local picture of idolatry’s entrenchment and the cost of confronting it: Baal worship is embedded in a leading household; dismantling it provokes a death demand; and Gideon’s fear is named rather than hidden (vv. 25–30). It also presents a theological claim through narrative logic: a deity who needs humans to “save” him is being exposed as powerless (v. 31), and Gideon’s renaming publicly stamps that claim onto his identity (v. 32).
