Question 1

What exact outcome is Gideon asking God to confirm in verses 36–37?

Accepted Answer

Gideon is not asking generally whether God exists or is able; he frames the request around a specific promise already given. Twice he repeats the idea “as you have spoken,” and he states the outcome he wants confirmed: that God will “save Israel by my hand.” The requested sign is therefore connected to Gideon’s role in the promised rescue, not merely to guidance about a choice between options. The passage’s explicit claim is that Gideon wants to “know” that this promised deliverance through him is truly what God intends.

Question 2

How does the repeated phrase “as you have spoken” shape the meaning of Gideon’s request?

Accepted Answer

The repetition links Gideon’s test to an earlier divine word rather than to a new demand for a fresh message. In verses 36–37, Gideon makes the sign conditional on what God has already said: if God will save Israel by Gideon’s hand as promised, then let the sign occur. This does not tell the reader whether Gideon’s posture is commendable or blameworthy, but it does show that he is not inventing a new mission. The test functions as confirmation of an existing word, not replacement of it.

Question 3

What are the two fleece tests, and how are they related to each other?

Accepted Answer

The first test (vv. 37–38) requests dew on the wool fleece only, while the surrounding ground remains dry. The next morning the narrative reports that it happened, and Gideon wrings out enough dew to fill a bowl. The second test (vv. 39–40) reverses the conditions: the fleece should be dry while dew covers all the ground. Again, the narrative reports that God did so “that night.” The relationship is deliberate contrast: the second test mirrors and reverses the first, strengthening the confirmation by repeating it with opposite conditions.

Question 4

What does Gideon’s request “then shall I know” suggest about what he lacks or wants (v. 37)?

Accepted Answer

In the passage, “then shall I know” signals that Gideon is seeking certainty about God’s promise to save Israel through him. The text does not specify whether his uncertainty is fear, doubt, prudence, or a mixture, but it does make clear that he feels he does not yet have enough assurance to proceed without confirmation. The wording also shows that Gideon expects a particular kind of knowledge—something grounded in an observable event matching God’s response to his request—rather than an internal impression alone.

Question 5

Why does Gideon ask God not to be angry before the second test (v. 39)?

Accepted Answer

Gideon’s plea indicates he recognizes that asking again is risky or potentially offensive. The narrative does not say God was angry, but Gideon anticipates that repeated testing could be seen as overstepping. That awareness helps explain why he speaks cautiously (“I will speak but this once”) even though he proceeds to request a second trial. At the level of explicit text, Gideon’s words show humility and concern about God’s response, while still asking for further confirmation.

Question 6

How does the narrative report God’s response, and what does it emphasize?

Accepted Answer

The story is told in a straightforward cause-and-result way: Gideon asks for specific conditions, and each time the requested conditions occur exactly. Verse 38 emphasizes the result’s tangibility by describing Gideon squeezing the fleece and producing “a bowl full of water.” Verse 40 emphasizes the second fulfillment with the simple statement that God did so that night, with the fleece dry and dew on all the ground. The narrative emphasizes precision and repetition—God answers both requests in the manner Gideon specified.

Question 7

What role do the setting details (threshing floor, dew, wool fleece) play in the story?

Accepted Answer

The setting details make the sign testable and public in ordinary terms: dew forms overnight, a threshing floor is an open area exposed to night air, and wool can absorb moisture. These details help the reader see why Gideon chooses this kind of sign: it is observable the next morning and physically verifiable (he can wring water out). They also allow different impressions about how extraordinary each sign is, but the narrative’s point remains that the outcomes match Gideon’s stated requests exactly.
