Verses 1
Jerubbaal (Gideon) camps by the spring of Harod; Midian’s camp is described as north, near the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Verses 2–3
YHWH declares the force with Gideon is “too many,” giving a stated concern that Israel could claim credit. Gideon announces that the fearful may depart; the narrative reports a large reduction.
Verses 4–6
A second reduction occurs at the water. The group is separated by differing drinking postures/actions; three hundred are counted in the selected group.
Verses 7–8
The three hundred are retained while the others are sent away. The remaining group keeps supplies and trumpets, and the scene closes with Midian still camped below in the valley.
