Arrival at the camp edge and the first shock Gideon and his hundred reach the outer edge of the camp at the beginning of the “middle watch,” right after new guards have been posted. At that moment they blow the trumpets and smash the jars they are holding. The timing and the sudden crash amplify the surprise.
Full coordination and the battle-cry All three groups do the same actions together: trumpet blasts, jars broken, torches now visible. They hold torches in the left hand and trumpets in the right so the sound continues while the light stays raised. The passage strongly combines human strategy (timing, coordination, surrounding the camp, continuing trumpet blasts) with a theological explanation (“Yahweh set…”). Because the narrator does not spell out the mechanism, readers differ on how tightly to connect God’s action to the immediate psychology and confusion of night combat.
The text contributes a picture of deliverance in which a small, disciplined group uses signals (trumpets/light/shouting) to trigger collapse inside a much larger camp, and the story frames that collapse as ultimately attributable to Yahweh (Judg 7:22).
