Question 1

What key facts does the narrator highlight about the Midianite force in v.10, and what effect do those details have on the story?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 gives two main facts: where the kings are (Karkor) and how much their coalition has shrunk (about 15,000 left; 120,000 already fallen). The location tells the reader the chase has moved far from the original battlefield and is still underway. The numbers underline how decisive the earlier fighting has been and how vulnerable the kings now are. Even without knowing whether the totals are exact or rounded, the narrative effect is clear: the enemy is no longer a massive, unstoppable force but a reduced remnant still led by its kings.

Question 2

How does v.11 describe Gideon’s approach, and why might the route description matter?

Accepted Answer

Verse 11 says Gideon “went up” by a route associated with people who live in tents, east of Nobah and Jogbehah. This matters because it suggests an unexpected approach rather than a straightforward pursuit on the main path. The mention of a tent-dwelling region signals terrain and population patterns that fit mobile groups and open spaces, where a force could move without being easily tracked. In the story, the route description supports the next point: Gideon arrives in a way that leaves the enemy unprepared and enables a surprise strike.

Question 3

What does the phrase “the host was secure” communicate in the flow of v.11?

Accepted Answer

In context, “secure” explains why Gideon’s attack works: the camp does not expect an immediate assault and is not operating with urgent readiness. The verse does not specify whether they were asleep, lightly guarded, celebrating, or simply convinced Gideon could not reach them quickly. But the narrative logic is that their confidence becomes a weakness. The author uses the term to frame Gideon’s timing as key: he hits when the enemy’s mindset and posture are least suited to resist, turning the encounter into panic and flight rather than a set battle.

Question 4

Trace the sequence of actions in v.12 and identify the turning point that leads to capture.

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 moves in a rapid chain: the kings flee, Gideon pursues, he captures both Zebah and Zalmunna, and the remaining host becomes “confused” (thrown into disorder). The turning point is the successful pursuit that ends in the kings’ capture. Once the leaders are seized, the cohesion of what remains of the army collapses. The text does not describe a long siege or negotiation; it portrays a chase that ends with the removal of leadership and the scattering or destabilizing of the force. The capture functions as the narrative climax of this pursuit section.

Question 5

How do vv.10–12 portray the relationship between leadership (the kings) and the strength of the army?

Accepted Answer

The passage ties the army’s fate closely to the kings’ situation. In v.10, the kings are still “with their hosts,” implying the remnant’s identity and direction are bound to them. In v.12, once the kings flee and are captured, the host becomes disordered. The story’s implied logic is that seizing leaders breaks morale, coordination, and the possibility of a unified counterattack. The narrator highlights numbers to show reduced capacity, but he highlights the kings to show that leadership loss is the decisive blow that turns a remnant into a rout.

Question 6

What is the narrative purpose of naming places (Nobah, Jogbehah, Karkor) in this short unit?

Accepted Answer

The place-names function like anchors that show movement and distance: the kings are at Karkor, and Gideon comes via a route east of Nobah and Jogbehah. Even if modern readers cannot identify each location precisely, the text uses them to convey that Gideon presses the pursuit into Transjordan territory and approaches from an unexpected direction. This supports the portrayal of a realistic chase across varied terrain and helps the reader see the action as a continuing campaign rather than a single isolated skirmish. The geography contributes to the plausibility and tempo of the narrative.

Question 7

What can be concluded from the text about how the host was “confused,” and what cannot be concluded?

Accepted Answer

From the text, it can be concluded that the remaining Midianite force ends up in a state of disorder after Gideon’s strike and the kings’ capture. The word reports the outcome: their cohesion breaks, making organized resistance ineffective. What cannot be concluded from these verses alone is the precise mechanism—whether this disorder came mainly from tactical surprise, nighttime conditions, panic from losing leaders, or an additional divine disorientation beyond normal battlefield effects. The narrator does not explain the method, so responsible interpretation stays with the stated result rather than filling in details as certain.
