Work in the fields becomes an opening for ambush On the next day, Shechem’s people go out into the fields, and Abimelech is informed. He responds by organizing his forces into three groups and hiding in the field. When he sees people coming out of the city, he attacks them, turning an ordinary day’s labor into a planned strike.
Gate control and field slaughter Abimelech and one group rush to the city gate and take up position at its entrance, effectively controlling the main access point. The other two groups sweep through those still in the field and kill them. The action is coordinated: one force blocks and pressures the city, while the others eliminate exposed civilians or fighters outside.
Shechem captured, depopulated, and symbolically ruined Abimelech fights against the city all day, finally taking it. The text says he kills the people inside, tears the city down, and “sows it with salt.” The narrative presents this as totalizing violence—physical destruction plus an added act that marks the site as intentionally devastated.

The events reflect a time when Israel was not a centralized kingdom but a patchwork of towns and tribes with shifting local loyalties. Fortified cities had gates as key defensive points, and “towers” or citadels served as emergency refuges during raids or civil fighting. Fieldwork outside city walls could expose residents to ambush, especially when conflict was already simmering. Burning a stronghold by piling brushwood at its entrance fits siege improvisation rather than long-term siegecraft. Sowing ruins with salt signals deliberate devastation and a public warning against rebuilding or resettling.
