Question 1

In vv. 34–36, what specific wrongs are listed, and what setting do they imply?

Accepted Answer

The passage lists three wrongs: trampling or crushing prisoners (v. 34), denying a person’s rights “before the face of the Most High” (v. 35), and subverting someone “in his cause,” meaning twisting a legal case (v. 36). These images imply public, institutional settings—imprisonment and courts—not merely private conflicts. The phrase about the Most High highlights that these abuses occur under God’s gaze, even if carried out by powerful people. The closing line—“the Lord doesn’t approve”—states God’s disapproval of these actions.

Question 2

How do vv. 34–36 relate to the claim in v. 37 that nothing comes to pass without the Lord’s command?

Accepted Answer

Verses 34–36 assert that human beings commit real abuses and that God does not approve them. Verse 37 then broadens the perspective: no one can speak and make reality happen unless the Lord commands it. Read together, the text places human injustice and historical outcomes under God’s ultimate rule while still treating oppression as genuinely wrong. The tension is part of the poem’s logic: even when events are under God’s governance, that does not turn corruption into something God “approves.” The passage holds both claims without fully explaining the mechanics.

Question 3

What is the force of the rhetorical question in v. 37, and who is being challenged?

Accepted Answer

The question asks who can simply say something and have it happen if the Lord has not commanded it. The implied answer is “no one.” This challenges human claims to control—whether rulers issuing decrees, oppressors acting as if they set reality, or anyone interpreting events as purely human or accidental. In context with the earlier lines about courts and prisoners, it also undercuts the idea that unjust powers are ultimate. The poem is asserting that the Lord’s word, not human speech, is final in determining what “comes to pass.”

Question 4

In v. 38, what are the main ways “evil and good” can be understood, and what is certain from the text?

Accepted Answer

“Evil and good” can be heard as harmful and beneficial events—disaster and well-being—coming under the Most High’s decree. Some readers also hear the phrase more broadly as encompassing everything that occurs, which raises questions about moral evil. What is certain from the text is the claim of comprehensive divine governance: outcomes people label as negative or positive are not outside God’s rule. The verse speaks of these things coming from God’s “mouth,” emphasizing the role of divine word or command in what happens.

Question 5

What does v. 39 suggest about the speaker’s view of suffering and complaint?

Accepted Answer

Verse 39 asks why a living person complains, describing the suffering as “punishment…for the punishment of his sins.” That frames suffering—at least in this context—as deserved discipline connected to wrongdoing, not random misfortune. The rhetorical question implies that complaint is questionable when the sufferer is still alive and the suffering is understood as penalty for sin. In the larger poem (3:22–33), this fits with the call to wait quietly and accept being struck, though here the emphasis is specifically on guilt and punishment as a lens for interpreting pain.

Question 6

How does the phrase “before the face of the Most High” (v. 35) shape the meaning of the injustice described?

Accepted Answer

It emphasizes that the denial of rights happens in God’s presence—nothing about the injustice is hidden from him. It also suggests a setting where people might claim legitimacy: legal proceedings, judgments, and public decisions are made as if under divine oversight. The phrase intensifies the moral seriousness: to “turn aside the right” is not only a crime against a human victim but an affront carried out before the supreme Judge. That sets up the later claims about God’s command (vv. 37–38): the same God who rules events also sees and evaluates human actions.

Question 7

Does the passage portray the Lord as doing the oppression in vv. 34–36 or condemning it? What in the wording supports your answer?

Accepted Answer

The passage portrays the oppression as human wrongdoing and presents the Lord as condemning it. The lines list abuses (crushing prisoners, denying rights, subverting a case) and then conclude, “the Lord doesn’t approve” (v. 36). That closing evaluation functions like a verdict on the actions just named. Also, the wrongs are described as things that happen “before the face of the Most High” (v. 35), implying God is the witness and judge rather than the perpetrator. The poem then shifts to God’s command over events in vv. 37–38.
