Question 1

In verse 1, what three requests are made to Yahweh, and what do they aim at?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 stacks three verbs—“remember,” “look,” and “see”—to press for God’s attention. The aim is not to inform God of unknown facts but to plead that God keep their situation in view and respond to it. The object of God’s seeing is “our reproach,” meaning their public shame and humiliation. The verse functions like an opening appeal that frames everything that follows as evidence offered to God: what has “come on us” is not described yet, but it will be shown through concrete losses in the next verses.

Question 2

What does “remember” most naturally mean here, based on the verse and its immediate flow?

Accepted Answer

In this setting, “remember” fits best as a request for God to take notice in a way that leads somewhere—at minimum, renewed attention and concern, and likely some form of response. That is supported by the parallel requests “look” and “see,” which intensify the same idea. The speaker is not saying God has forgotten facts; the prayer sounds like a plea that God would treat the community’s disgrace as present and weighty rather than ignored. The next verses then supply reasons God should “see” their plight.

Question 3

In verse 2, what two items are said to have shifted away from the community, and what does that imply?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 names two losses: “our inheritance” and “our houses.” Both are said to have gone to “strangers” and “aliens,” language that stresses people who are not part of “us.” The implication is dispossession—loss of rightful possession and control—rather than ordinary travel or hospitality. “Inheritance” suggests land or patrimony that should have remained with the community, while “houses” points to tangible homes now occupied or owned by others. Together they underline that their shame is economic and social, not only emotional.

Question 4

How does verse 3 shift from property loss to family imagery, and what effect does that have?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 moves from land and houses to people and households: “We are orphans and fatherless; our mothers are as widows.” That shift makes the disaster feel immediate and bodily, not just administrative. It highlights vulnerability in a world where fathers and husbands often provided protection, legal standing, and support. The parallel lines also widen the scope from individual grief to communal condition—“we” and “our mothers” portray many families affected. The family imagery functions as proof of social collapse: the community is exposed, not secure.

Question 5

What does the phrase “as widows” contribute, and why might it be phrased that way?

Accepted Answer

Saying “our mothers are as widows” can point to literal widowhood, but the wording “as” also allows a broader sense: their situation resembles widowhood in its insecurity and exposure, even if not every case is technically a widow. The phrasing therefore communicates a shared experience of vulnerability. It also strengthens the lament’s evidentiary style: the community is not only shamed; its households lack normal support structures. Read with verses 1–2, it shows that disgrace includes both public loss (property) and private fragility (family protection).

Question 6

Across verses 1–3, how does the passage connect “reproach” to the specific circumstances described?

Accepted Answer

“Reproach” in verse 1 is not left abstract; verses 2–3 define what that shame looks like on the ground. Their “inheritance” and “houses” belonging to outsiders indicates defeat and loss of status. Describing themselves as “orphans and fatherless” and mothers “like widows” depicts a community unable to protect and sustain itself. The connection is that their humiliation is visible to others and felt in daily survival. The passage treats these conditions as the evidence God is asked to look at and acknowledge.

Question 7

What kind of speaker is implied in these verses (individual or communal), and what features point that way?

Accepted Answer

The repeated “us,” “our,” and “we” point to a communal voice rather than a private lament. The concerns are also collective: inheritance and houses are framed as belonging to the community, and the family images are generalized (“we are orphans… our mothers…”). Even if an individual leads the prayer, the language gathers the people’s shared condition into one petition to Yahweh. This fits the opening of a chapter that reads like a public prayer: short lines, urgent requests, and a list of conditions offered as communal evidence.
