What does “put fire on the altar” mean? Some take it as lighting a fire. Others take it as tending or placing burning coals/fire so the altar is ready, not necessarily describing the first ignition.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is brief and uses repeated pronouns (“he”) while also shifting to explicit priestly subjects (“Aaron’s sons”). That invites questions about continuity of subject across sentences. Also, English translations differ on verbs like “sprinkle/throw” and on how to picture “put fire,” which can describe either starting or maintaining a fire.
What this passage clearly contributes This passage shows that access to the altar is structured: the offerer participates directly, but priests manage the most sacred points of contact—blood handling and altar preparation. It also portrays sacrifice as orderly and deliberate, not improvised: blood is applied in a defined way at a defined place (the altar by the tent entrance), the animal is prepared in stages, and the altar is made ready with fire and arranged wood. These steps set up the burning that follows in the next verses (see Leviticus 1:8).
