Literary Context
These verses close the larger episode in Leviticus 10 where the priesthood begins its public service, a crisis occurs, and Moses gives immediate instructions about proper conduct around the sanctuary. Just before this, Moses had been angry because a sin-offering had not been eaten as expected, and he questioned Aaron’s surviving sons (Lev 10:16–18). Verses 19–20 provide Aaron’s reply and the narrative resolution: Aaron gives a reason framed in terms of what would be “pleasing” to Yahweh, and Moses’ anger subsides because the explanation fits the situation.
Historical Context
Leviticus presents Israel in the wilderness period, centered on a portable sanctuary and a newly installed priesthood. Sacrificial meals were part of how priests carried out their duties, and correct handling of offerings signaled loyalty to the sanctuary’s procedures. The setting assumes a tight-knit community where public worship and community order overlap, and where a family’s status can shift quickly due to sudden deaths or ritual complications. Aaron’s words reflect a world where “what is acceptable before Yahweh” guides decisions, even when a standard practice might be expected.
Theological Significance
Aaron answers Moses by pointing to the same day’s events: required offerings were presented “before Yahweh,” yet something grievous has happened to Aaron and his family. Aaron’s core claim is about what would be acceptable “in Yahweh’s sight” if he (or the priests under his charge) went on to eat the sin-offering meal under those conditions. One main question is what made eating the sin-offering “not pleasing” that day. Some readers think Aaron is mainly talking about grief and emotional fitness for a sacred meal after the deaths earlier in the chapter. Others think the issue is more concrete: the deaths may have created a ritual problem (for example, contact with death) that made participation in the meal inappropriate.
A second, smaller question is who “they” refers to when Aaron says “they offered” the offerings: Aaron’s sons, the priestly group, or the household under Aaron’s leadership. The overall point remains the same in each case: the required offerings were indeed presented.
The phrase “such things as these” is general, and the text does not spell out whether the problem is grief, ritual status, or another kind of “fitness” for the sacred meal. Also, the verses summarize Aaron’s logic without re-listing the earlier instructions about eating the sin-offering, so interpreters differ on how tightly Aaron’s reasoning is tied to those prior rules.
