A time-based boundary during impurity The command forbids “approaching” a woman for sex while she is “impure by her uncleanness.” The point is not simply that the woman is in a certain condition, but that the man must not initiate sexual access during that period. A partner-based boundary against adultery The command forbids having sexual intercourse with “your neighbor’s wife.” It portrays the act as making the man “defile” himself, highlighting that the wrongdoing carries a contaminating effect on the offender, not only harm to the marriage. Second, what kind of “defilement” is in view in v. 20. Some emphasize ritual impurity language (making someone unfit for sacred space). Others emphasize moral pollution (the act itself is corrupting), and many see the text intentionally blending both ideas.
Why the disagreement exists The terms used (“approach,” “uncleanness,” “defile”) can operate in more than one sphere in Leviticus—bodily status and moral wrongdoing often overlap. Also, “neighbor” can be read narrowly (someone within Israel’s community) or more generally (someone in one’s social world), and the immediate context does not stop to define the boundary.
