Question 1

What items does the offerer contribute to the meal offering in verses 1–2, and how are they treated differently?

Accepted Answer

Verses 1–2 list three components: fine flour, oil, and frankincense. The flour is the base of the offering, and oil is poured onto it, making the gift richer and likely easier to prepare or burn. Frankincense is placed on it, but verse 2 shows it is handled distinctly: the priest takes a handful of flour and oil, yet takes all the frankincense to be burned. So the incense is not divided into a “handful” and a remainder the way the flour and oil are. That difference helps explain why the altar portion is described with strong scent language.

Question 2

In what sequence does the text describe movement and roles: offerer, priests, altar, and remainder?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves in a clear order. First, the offerer prepares the offering—fine flour with oil and frankincense—and offers it to Yahweh (v. 1). Next, the offerer brings it to Aaron’s sons, the priests (v. 2), showing the offerer does not perform the altar action directly. Then the priest takes a “handful” portion of flour and oil plus all the frankincense and burns that “memorial” portion on the altar (v. 2). Finally, what is left is assigned to Aaron and his sons (v. 3), and it is still treated as especially set apart.

Question 3

What does the text explicitly say is burned, and what does it explicitly say is kept?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 explicitly states that the priest burns a portion made up of a handful of the fine flour and its oil, together with all its frankincense. That burned portion is called “the memorial of it” and is burned on the altar as an offering made by fire. Verse 3 explicitly states that what is left of the meal offering belongs to Aaron and his sons. So, the incense is entirely burned, while the grain-and-oil mixture is divided: part is burned and part remains. The text does not describe the later eating process here, only the allocation.

Question 4

How does the passage portray priestly mediation in this offering?

Accepted Answer

Priestly mediation is emphasized by who handles the offering at key points. The offerer brings the prepared gift “to Aaron’s sons the priests” (v. 2), and the priest is the one who takes the portion and burns it on the altar. That means the altar action is not presented as private household worship; it is tied to the sanctuary and its authorized ministers. Verse 3 adds that the remainder becomes the priests’ share, reinforcing that priestly service and priestly provision are linked: the same offering that goes to Yahweh through fire also sustains Aaron and his sons.

Question 5

What is the function of calling the altar portion “the memorial,” based on what the text actually includes?

Accepted Answer

The text does not define “memorial,” but it connects the word to a specific action and portion: the part the priest burns on the altar (v. 2). Since only a representative “handful” of flour and oil is burned—along with all the frankincense—the term likely marks that burned portion as the offering’s official representation before Yahweh. The label also helps explain why burning a small part can stand for the whole gift: the memorial portion is what is placed into the altar-fire, while the remainder is treated as priestly food but still as something set apart (v. 3).

Question 6

What does “most holy” add to the statement that the remainder belongs to Aaron and his sons?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 could have simply said the remainder is for Aaron and his sons, but it adds that it is “a most holy thing” among Yahweh’s offerings made by fire. That additional label signals that even though the priests receive it, the remainder is not ordinary property detached from worship. It stays closely tied to Yahweh’s altar system and is treated as especially set apart. The text here does not spell out the practical rules, but it clearly frames the priests’ share as a sacred allotment rather than a casual leftover from a ceremony.

Question 7

What repeated ideas in these verses highlight that the offering is directed to Yahweh while handled by priests?

Accepted Answer

Yahweh is named repeatedly: the meal offering is offered “to Yahweh” (v. 1), the burned portion is a sweet savor “to Yahweh” (v. 2), and the remainder is described as belonging to the category of offerings “of Yahweh made by fire” (v. 3). At the same time, the priests are central actors: the offering is brought to Aaron’s sons (v. 2), the priest takes the portion, and the priest burns it on the altar. The repeated pairing shows a pattern: the gift is for Yahweh, but it is processed through priestly ministry.
