Escalation through drought and failed yield If the people still will not listen after earlier warnings, God says he will “chastise” them “seven times more” for their sins. The result is a collapse of confidence and productivity: “the pride of your power” is broken, the sky becomes like iron and the earth like brass, and effort produces little. Land and trees stop giving their normal increase.
Escalation through plagues and wild animals If they continue to “walk contrary” and refuse to listen, God adds “seven times more plagues.” One concrete picture is wild animals entering human space: they take children, kill cattle, reduce the population, and leave roads empty and desolate.
Escalation through conflict, siege, disease, and defeat If these measures still do not “reform” them and they keep walking contrary, God responds in kind: he too will “walk contrary” and strike them “seven times.” The threats broaden: a sword comes against them as covenant retaliation; people retreat into cities; pestilence spreads; and the enemy gains control over them.

Leviticus presents these instructions as given to Israel in the wilderness period after leaving Egypt and while organizing communal life around the tabernacle. The images assume an agrarian economy in a dry land where rainfall patterns determine survival: “sky as iron” and “earth as brass” portray prolonged drought and hard ground. The threats also match common ancient Near Eastern vulnerabilities: crop failure, livestock loss, attacks by animals outside settled areas, epidemic spread in crowded towns, and enemy pressure leading people to retreat behind city walls.
