Base valuation and time-to-Jubilee adjustment If someone sets apart part of an inherited field to Yahweh, the valuation is pegged to its productive capacity: land that would take a homer of barley seed is valued at fifty shekels of silver (v.16). If the dedication happens right from the Jubilee year, that full valuation stands as-is (v.17). The section before this moves from valuing persons to valuing a house, then turns to valuing land, with special attention to the Jubilee cycle. The logic keeps returning to two themes: the priest provides an official valuation, and a clear payment rule prevents confusion or manipulation when a dedication is later redeemed.
Historical Context
The rules assume an agrarian Israel where family landholdings are a primary form of wealth and identity, and where harvest potential can be estimated by seed requirements. The Jubilee is treated as a known reset point for land tenure: time matters because the nearer Jubilee is, the fewer harvest years remain. The presence of “the shekel of the sanctuary” implies an official standard of weights used at the sanctuary to avoid local variation. The priest’s role reflects a public, trusted authority who can apply a consistent valuation in a community centered around the tabernacle.

In v.20, does “sell the field to another” mean selling it after it has been dedicated to Yahweh, or does it refer to selling it instead of redeeming it (as an alternative path once dedicated)? Either way, the outcome in the verse is the same: the right to redeem is lost.
How broad is “it shall not be redeemed anymore” (v.20)? Some read it as an absolute, permanent bar in every later scenario. Others read it as a bar on the original owner’s redemption rights once the field has been transferred away, because the dedication has effectively become fixed.
The passage compresses several steps (dedication, assessment, possible redemption, possible sale/transfer, Jubilee outcome) into short conditional statements (“if… or if…”). That leaves readers deciding how to sequence events and how to connect v.20 (“cannot be redeemed”) with v.21 (“becomes… the priests’”) and with the separate case of a purchased field (vv.22–24).
Explicitly, it provides a transparent economic framework for voluntary dedications of land: (1) productivity-based valuation, (2) time-to-Jubilee adjustment, (3) a 20% surcharge for redemption, (4) loss of redemption rights once not redeemed/once transferred, and (5) different Jubilee outcomes depending on whether land was inherited or purchased (vv.16–25).
