The test question and the law’s summary A law-expert stands up to test Jesus, asking what he must do to “inherit eternal life.” Jesus replies by directing him to what is written in the law and how he reads it. The man cites the core commands to love God with one’s whole being and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Jesus affirms the answer and presses it toward action: “Do this, and you will live.”
The attempt to narrow responsibility The man, wanting to justify himself, asks a clarifying question: “Who is my neighbor?” The question implies that the scope of “neighbor” might be limited, and that the man wants a defensible boundary for who must be loved in practice.
The story of the wounded man and three passersby Jesus describes a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho who is assaulted, stripped, beaten, and left half dead. A priest comes by, sees him, and passes on the other side; then a Levite does the same. A Samaritan traveler, however, sees the man and is moved with compassion. He treats the wounds with oil and wine, transports the man on his own animal, brings him to an inn, and continues care. The next day he pays two denarii to the innkeeper, instructs him to keep caring for the man, and promises to repay any additional cost upon his return.
Literary Context
This passage sits in Luke’s long “journey” section where Jesus is traveling toward Jerusalem and giving concentrated teaching through encounters, questions, and stories. It begins as a public exchange: a law-expert asks a framed question, Jesus answers by asking a counter-question, and the discussion pivots on how Scripture is read and applied. The story that follows functions as Jesus’ direct response to the follow-up question, “Who is my neighbor?” The ending returns to dialogue, making the story’s point land as a practical charge rather than a mere opinion.
Historical Context
A “lawyer” here is an expert in Israel’s law and its interpretation, someone socially positioned to evaluate a teacher’s answers. “Priest” and “Levite” represent recognized temple-linked roles and carry expectations of religious seriousness. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was known as a steep route through rugged terrain, fitting the story’s robbery scenario. Samaritans and Jews had long-standing tensions, so presenting a Samaritan as the compassionate helper would sound striking. Inns existed but could be basic, making the Samaritan’s financial commitment and promised return meaningful.
Theological Significance
This scene is built around a public debate about how Scripture should be read and carried out. Two main questions draw different conclusions.
What does “inherit eternal life” mean in this exchange? Some read the dialogue as mainly about the final future life with God, so the question is about ultimate destiny. Others think the phrase includes both the future and the kind of life that begins now under God’s rule, so the conversation also presses toward present-life faithfulness (inference from the wording and Luke’s themes).
What does “Do this, and you will live” mean here? Some take it as a straightforward statement that life is tied to doing what the law requires. Others stress that Jesus is exposing the limits of boundary-making and self-justification: the command is real, but it also shows how demanding neighbor-love is when “neighbor” is defined by mercy rather than by group membership (inference from v.29 and the story’s punchline).
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses compact phrases (“eternal life,” “live”) without stopping to define their time frame. Also, Jesus answers a question with a counter-question and then a story, which can be read either as direct instruction, as a critique of the questioner’s attempt to narrow responsibility, or both. Finally, the priest and Levite are not given motives, leaving readers to supply reasons (purity concerns, fear, hurry, indifference, or something else).
What this passage clearly contributes The text clearly presents love for God and love for neighbor as a faithful summary of the law (vv.27–28), and it depicts “neighbor” not as a label someone earns but as a role someone chooses through mercy (vv.36–37). It also makes the Samaritan’s compassion deliberately striking in context: the expected “religious heroes” do not help, while the socially distrusted outsider does. Mercy is shown as costly and practical—time, risk, touch, money, and follow-through—not merely a feeling (vv.33–35).
