Question 1

What kind of conversation is Luke describing in vv.25–26, and how does Jesus steer the exchange?

Accepted Answer

Luke frames the moment as a test: the law-expert stands up “testing” Jesus with a question about inheriting eternal life (v.25). Jesus does not answer directly at first. He redirects the authority question back to Scripture and interpretation: “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” (v.26). That move makes the conversation about the accepted text and the questioner’s reading of it, not simply Jesus’ personal opinion. It also puts the law-expert in the position of answering from his own field of expertise.

Question 2

In vv.27–28, what does the law-expert quote, and how does Jesus respond to that quote?

Accepted Answer

The law-expert answers with a two-part summary: wholehearted love for God (heart, soul, strength, mind) and love for one’s neighbor as oneself (v.27). The phrasing emphasizes total-person devotion rather than partial compliance. Jesus affirms the answer as correct and then presses it toward practice: “Do this, and you will live” (v.28). In the flow of the story, Jesus treats the summary as an accurate reading of the law while also making it clear that the key issue is not just reciting the right summary but living it out.

Question 3

What does v.29 reveal about why the law-expert asks, “Who is my neighbor?”

Accepted Answer

Verse 29 gives the motive explicitly: he asks because he wants “to justify himself.” That suggests the follow-up question is not neutral curiosity. It implies he is looking for a defensible boundary—who counts as neighbor and who does not—so he can confirm his own standing. The question therefore shifts from “What does the law say?” to “How far does my responsibility go?” Jesus’ story responds to that boundary-seeking impulse by reframing neighborliness around mercy rather than category.

Question 4

In the story (vv.30–35), what are the key contrasts between the priest/Levite and the Samaritan?

Accepted Answer

All three travelers see the injured man (vv.31–33), but the responses diverge. The priest and then the Levite “passed by on the other side,” creating distance after noticing him (vv.31–32). The Samaritan comes close: he is moved with compassion, treats wounds with oil and wine, places the man on his own animal, brings him to an inn, and continues care (vv.33–34). He also commits resources and future accountability, paying two denarii and promising to cover additional costs when he returns (v.35).

Question 5

How does Jesus’ concluding question in v.36 reshape the original question in v.29?

Accepted Answer

The law-expert asks, “Who is my neighbor?” (v.29), which assumes “neighbor” is a category of people to identify. Jesus ends by asking, “Which of these three seemed to be a neighbor to him?” (v.36). That reverses the angle: the issue is not locating the correct group but recognizing neighborliness as something done. The injured man is not evaluated for eligibility; the passersby are evaluated for mercy. The story therefore shifts the debate from defining the recipient to assessing the actor’s response.

Question 6

Why is the identification of the merciful person as a Samaritan significant within the story’s logic (vv.33, 37)?

Accepted Answer

Within the story, the Samaritan is the unexpected moral center. The priest and Levite carry social expectations of religious seriousness, yet they do not help (vv.31–32). A Samaritan—someone associated with longstanding tension in the background setting—becomes the one who shows compassion and provides costly care (vv.33–35). In v.37, the law-expert answers indirectly (“the one who showed mercy”), which suggests the point lands on the concrete action of mercy rather than the helper’s social identity, while still keeping the shock of who the helper is.

Question 7

What does the passage emphasize about what “mercy” looks like in practice (vv.33–35, 37)?

Accepted Answer

Mercy is portrayed as more than emotion. It begins with compassion (v.33), but it immediately becomes embodied and costly: approaching the injured man, treating wounds, providing transport, arranging lodging, and staying to care for him (v.34). It also includes financial responsibility and follow-through—payment up front and a promise to repay more on return (v.35). When Jesus asks who proved to be a neighbor, the law-expert identifies the one who “showed mercy” (v.37), tying neighborliness to tangible, sustained care for someone in need.
