Accept hospitality in receptive cities When they enter a city and are “received,” they are to eat what the hosts provide. The instruction treats welcome as the key indicator and frames the messengers as dependent guests rather than controllers of the situation.

The scene assumes small towns and cities in Jewish and nearby regions where itinerant teachers could arrive without formal invitations and depend on local households for food and lodging. Accepting what is set before them fits a setting where hosts provide whatever they have, and visitors could be tempted to be selective. Public speech “in the streets” reflects how disputes and announcements could be made openly before a town’s people. The reference to Sodom draws on shared cultural memory of a notorious city judged for severe wrongdoing, making the comparison instantly provocative.
Theological Significance
Jesus presents his messengers as guests, not power-brokers. In receptive towns they accept whatever food is offered, do tangible good (healing), and interpret their presence with one core announcement: “God’s kingdom has come near.” In rejecting towns they do not force entry or retaliate with violence. They make a public, visible sign of separation (wiping dust) and still state the same core message.

Many interpreters see both notes present because the same sentence is spoken in both welcome and rejection.
Why the disagreement exists The passage tightly pairs table fellowship with public proclamation, so it is hard to separate “welcome us” from “welcome what we say.” Also, Luke gives the gesture (dust) and the words (kingdom near) but does not pause to explain how flexible the gesture may be, or to define whether “near” points more to blessing or to crisis.
