This scene presents an exorcism as a real deliverance with public impact: a man who could not speak speaks, and the crowd reacts (vv. 14–16). The central dispute is not whether something happened but what power is behind it. Some interpret Jesus’ act as demonic-backed, while others treat it as inadequate proof and demand an additional “sign from heaven.”

Jesus’ reply makes several explicit claims. A power that is internally fighting itself collapses (vv. 17–18). If his critics accept other exorcists from their own community (“your sons”) as legitimate, their accusation about Jesus becomes inconsistent (v. 19). Jesus offers his own explanation: his exorcisms are “by the finger of God,” meaning God’s reign has arrived “to you” in their midst (v. 20; cf. Luke 11:20).

He then frames the conflict as a contest of strength: a stronger attacker overcomes a guarded “strong man,” takes his armor, and distributes the goods (vv. 21–22). The concluding warning uses a story of an unclean spirit leaving and returning with worse allies, making the final condition worse than the first (vv. 24–26). Taken together, the passage treats deliverance as a real victory, but not a guarantee of lasting safety if the freed “house” remains merely empty and orderly.

Where interpretation differs

1) What “finger of God” is emphasizing (v. 20).

• Some read it mainly as a vivid way of saying “God’s power,” stressing that Jesus’ authority is truly from God.
• Others hear a stronger echo of earlier biblical language (especially the exodus story) and think Luke is presenting Jesus’ work as a major turning point where God is decisively confronting evil and freeing people.

2) Who “your sons” refers to (v. 19).

• Some understand it as other Jewish exorcists connected to the critics’ community.
• Others take it more generally as “your people” or “your followers,” without requiring a specific group to be identified.

3) How to take the returning-spirit story (vv. 24–26).

• Some take it as a fairly literal description of how spirits behave.
• Others treat it chiefly as a warning illustration about relapse: removal of evil is not the same as a lasting change in allegiance and governance.

Why the disagreement exists

The passage uses compressed images (a divided kingdom, a strong man’s house, a restless spirit) and brief phrases (“finger of God,” “your sons”) without pausing to define them. That invites readers to decide how much background to import from other biblical scenes and how literally to take the imagery. Also, Jesus is answering opponents and bystanders at once, so his statements can be heard as aimed narrowly (at accusers) or broadly (at anyone trying to stay neutral).

What this passage clearly contributes

• It insists the “source” question matters: the same event can be interpreted as God’s work or as something to be discredited (vv. 14–16).
• It presents Jesus’ exorcisms as evidence of God’s active reign arriving in the present (“come to you,” v. 20).
• It depicts evil as organized and contested, and Jesus as the “stronger” power who can overtake and strip the opponent’s defenses (vv. 21–22).
• It denies a middle ground in the conflict Jesus describes: not gathering with him results in scattering (v. 23).
• It warns that a first deliverance can be followed by a worse condition if the person is left vulnerable to return (vv. 24–26).
