The demand for a sign and the “sign of Jonah” As the crowd thickens, Jesus calls the current “generation” morally wrong and says it keeps hunting for a sign. He refuses to provide the kind of proof they want, saying the only sign they will receive is “the sign of Jonah.” He explains by comparison: Jonah functioned as a sign to Nineveh, and in the same way “the Son of Man” will function as a sign to this generation.
