Question 1

What motivates the shepherds to go to Bethlehem, and what do they think they are going to do there?

Accepted Answer

In v. 15 the shepherds respond immediately after the angels leave. Their stated plan is to “go…now” and “see this thing that has happened.” They view the event as something real in the world, not only a private vision, and they connect their knowledge of it to God’s disclosure: “which the Lord has made known to us.” The wording suggests both urgency and verification. They are not going to invent a story; they are going to check what they have been told and to locate the event in a specific place (Bethlehem).

Question 2

Which details in v. 16 function as confirmation of the earlier message, and why do they matter in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 emphasizes speed (“with haste”) and specific findings: they locate Mary, Joseph, and “the baby lying in the feeding trough.” The feeding trough detail is a concrete marker that matches the earlier sign given to them, so it functions as a point of recognition rather than a random description. Narratively, this turns the shepherds from hearers into eyewitnesses. The story presents a tight connection between announcement and observable reality, so the shepherds’ later reporting rests on both what they heard and what they saw.

Question 3

After they see the baby, what exactly do the shepherds spread, and how is it described?

Accepted Answer

In v. 17 the shepherds “publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.” The content they spread is not described as their own conclusions; it is the “saying” they received. Luke frames the shepherds as transmitters of a message, now backed by sight. The wording also keeps the focus “concerning this child,” suggesting that their speech centers on what they were told about the child’s significance, not merely that a birth happened. The passage does not detail every line they repeated, but it stresses the origin of the report.

Question 4

How do the listeners respond in v. 18, and what does that response indicate (and not indicate)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 says “all who heard it wondered” at what the shepherds told them. “Wondered” indicates amazement or astonishment at surprising news. It signals that the report is attention-grabbing and socially disruptive in a small-town sense: people talk and react. However, the verse does not claim that everyone believed, understood, or committed themselves to anything. Wonder can be the first response to an extraordinary claim without resolving what each person concluded. Luke highlights the spread and impact of the testimony, not the final decisions of the crowd.

Question 5

What is distinctive about Mary’s response in v. 19 compared with the crowd’s response in v. 18?

Accepted Answer

Mary’s response is described as inward and ongoing: she “kept all these sayings” and was “pondering them in her heart” (v. 19). Unlike the crowd’s immediate amazement, Mary’s posture is to preserve the reports and reflect on their meaning over time. The focus is not on public reaction but on sustained consideration. The “sayings” likely include what the shepherds report (and the earlier events surrounding Jesus’ birth). Luke presents Mary as someone who holds together multiple pieces of testimony and experience and works through what they mean, rather than simply reacting in the moment.

Question 6

How does v. 20 summarize the shepherds’ outcome, and what is the stated reason for their praise?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 shows the shepherds returning to their normal setting (“returned”), while now “glorifying and praising God.” Luke gives a reason: they praise God “for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken to them.” Their worship is tied to correspondence between message and reality—hearing matched by seeing. The verse does not describe them leaving their vocation or changing social status; it describes a changed interpretation of events. Their praise functions as the narrative seal: the announcement has been verified and results in public testimony and God-directed praise.

Question 7

What repeated elements connect vv. 15–20 into a single flow of testimony?

Accepted Answer

Several repeated elements tie the unit together: the movement from “spoken/made known” (v. 15) to “found/seen” (v. 16–17), to “spoken…by the shepherds” (v. 18), back to “sayings” kept by Mary (v. 19), and finally to “heard and seen…as it was spoken” (v. 20). The passage repeatedly links speech and event. It also alternates between outward communication (shepherds and listeners) and inward processing (Mary). This produces a coherent chain: divine message → human verification → public report → varied responses → praise grounded in confirmed testimony.
