Question 1

What details does Luke give to establish Anna’s identity and credibility in the scene (vv. 36–37)?

Accepted Answer

Luke introduces Anna with several identifying markers: her name, her role (“prophetess”), her father’s name (Phanuel), and her tribe (Asher). He also stresses age and longevity through a short marriage followed by a very long period as a widow. Beyond biography, Luke highlights recognizable patterns: she “didn’t depart from the temple” and served God with fasting and prayers “night and day.” These details function together to portray her as a known, consistent, devout figure whose words in the temple would carry weight among others who shared Israel’s hopes.

Question 2

What is the range of meaning for “about eighty-four years” in v. 37, and how does either reading affect interpretation?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “about eighty-four years” can be read in two main ways: (1) Anna had been a widow for about eighty-four years, or (2) Anna was about eighty-four years old. The immediate context mentions her seven-year marriage and then her widowhood, which makes the widowhood reading natural. But the wording can also be heard as a direct age statement. In either case, Luke’s emphasis is not on constructing a precise timeline but on establishing that Anna is very old and has had a long, stable history of devotion connected to the temple.

Question 3

What does Luke mean when he says Anna “didn’t depart from the temple” (v. 37), and what does the text itself actually claim?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly claims constancy: Anna is characterized by not leaving the temple and by worship marked with fasting and prayers “night and day.” Luke does not describe her housing arrangements, finances, or whether this is literal 24/7 residence or a strong way of speaking about regular presence. Either way, Luke’s purpose is clear: she is repeatedly and reliably found there, and her life is shaped around temple worship. The passage uses her ongoing presence to prepare the reader to take her testimony seriously when she recognizes the significance of the child.

Question 4

How does v. 38 connect Anna’s action to the events just before, and what are the two actions Luke highlights?

Accepted Answer

Luke links Anna’s arrival to the temple moment with the phrase “at that very hour,” tying her appearance to the same time window as the earlier recognition of the child. He then highlights two actions: first, she “gave thanks to the Lord,” which presents her response as worship directed to God. Second, she “spoke of him” to others. Luke portrays her as both responding vertically (gratitude to God) and horizontally (public speech). Her testimony is not described as private insight only; it is communicated to a defined group within Jerusalem’s hope-filled atmosphere.

Question 5

Who are “all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem” (v. 38), and what does that phrase suggest about the audience?

Accepted Answer

Luke does not list names or social classes; he describes the audience by expectation. “All those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem” suggests a circle of devout people in or around the temple who were waiting for God to act on behalf of his people. The word “all” most naturally refers to “all” within that identified group, not literally every resident of the city. Luke’s phrasing implies a community bound by hope and shared language about God’s rescue. Anna’s speech is aimed at people already oriented toward that expectation.

Question 6

What does v. 39 emphasize about Joseph and Mary, and how does that shape the story’s flow?

Accepted Answer

Verse 39 emphasizes completion and obedience: they accomplished “all things” according to the Lord’s law. Luke uses this to close the Jerusalem temple episode and to transition the family back to normal geography and normal life—Galilee, specifically Nazareth. The story’s flow moves from public recognition (in the temple, with witnesses like Simeon and Anna) to private family continuity (returning home). Luke does not describe the trip in detail; the point is that the temple obligations are fulfilled and the family’s life continues in their hometown setting.

Question 7

In v. 40, what elements does Luke include in the growth summary, and what is explicit versus implied?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Luke says the child grew, became strong “in spirit,” was filled with wisdom, and had God’s grace upon him. The growth language clearly indicates real development over time. “Strong in spirit” and “filled with wisdom” portray inner maturity and capability, though Luke does not explain the mechanics. God’s grace resting on him explicitly frames this development as occurring under divine favor. What is implied (rather than formally argued) is that Jesus’ early life is both genuinely human—growing and learning—and also marked from the start by God’s special approval and guidance.
