Question 1

How does Luke set up Jesus’ public credibility before the Nazareth synagogue reading (vv. 14–15), and why might that matter for understanding vv. 16–22?

Accepted Answer

Verses 14–15 describe momentum: Jesus returns “in the power of the Spirit,” news spreads, and he is praised for synagogue teaching. That means the Nazareth scene is not his first appearance but a representative, focused moment. The hometown audience is hearing someone already gaining a regional reputation, which raises expectations. It also sharpens the later tension: their question “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” is not asked because he is unknown, but because his growing public status clashes with what they think they know about his ordinary background.

Question 2

What details in vv. 16–17 emphasize that this was a normal synagogue setting rather than a private conversation?

Accepted Answer

Luke notes the Sabbath day, the synagogue, and that attending was Jesus’ custom. The scroll is formally handed to him, and he stands to read, suggesting a recognized role for reading Scripture publicly. The mention of the attendant, the opening and closing of the scroll, and then sitting down all fit a communal, structured gathering. The final line that “the eyes of all…were fastened on him” underscores a public, accountable setting where his words will be weighed by the community.

Question 3

In the Isaiah reading (vv. 18–19), what repeated actions describe the messenger’s work, and what do they imply about the mission’s shape?

Accepted Answer

The reading stacks active verbs: preach good news, heal, proclaim release, give sight, set free, proclaim the Lord’s favorable year. The repetition suggests a mission that is announced and enacted, not merely discussed. It also frames the mission as outward-facing: it targets specific groups described by need and harm (poor, captives, blind, crushed). Even without defining each term precisely, the combined list points to a broad agenda of restoration that is meant to be recognized in public life.

Question 4

What is the force of Jesus’ statement, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (v. 21), in the flow of the scene?

Accepted Answer

Jesus does not offer a general lesson about Isaiah; he ties the passage to the present moment (“today”) and to the audience’s experience (“in your hearing”). The explicit textual claim is that Isaiah’s words are now becoming reality in connection with Jesus himself. Luke places this line as the interpretive key to the whole reading: the Scripture is not only about past hope or distant future, but is being realized now. This creates a direct test: the listeners must decide what to do with a fulfillment claim attached to a known local figure.

Question 5

Why can the crowd both “testify about him” and “wonder at the words of grace” (v. 22) yet still question his identity?

Accepted Answer

The response contains two movements: admiration and hesitation. They speak well of him and find his speech compelling—Luke calls them “words of grace,” suggesting attractive, generous-sounding proclamation. Yet the question “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” signals that familiarity becomes a barrier. The issue is not simply whether the message sounds good, but whether they will accept the implied authority and role he claims. The contrast shows how positive reception can quickly turn uncertain when big claims collide with social memory and local expectations.

Question 6

How do the “Spirit” references (vv. 14, 18) frame Jesus’ activity across the whole paragraph?

Accepted Answer

Luke begins with Jesus returning “in the power of the Spirit” and then has Isaiah’s speaker say, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me.” This links Jesus’ public ministry to divine commissioning rather than personal ambition. The Spirit references function as the passage’s main explanation for why Jesus teaches with impact and why he can claim the Isaiah role. The text’s explicit claim is empowerment; the implied meaning is that what happens next in Luke should be read as Spirit-driven fulfillment of Scripture, not simply a new teacher’s platform.

Question 7

What does “proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” contribute to the mission description, even without defining the phrase fully?

Accepted Answer

The phrase adds a time-marker: the message is not only about individual cases of need but about a new season of God’s favor arriving. It frames the mission as announcing a changed situation in the present—an opening for restoration and relief. Readers debate how specifically it maps onto social practices like debt release, but the text clearly uses it to widen the scope beyond one healing or one person’s freedom. It signals a public, communal dimension: the “year” language sounds like an event that affects many, not just a few.
